SUMMER 2015 BRIDGE GRANTS - GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION
Purpose
The goals of the RISD Bridge Grants are to provide RISD Faculty and selected students the opportunity to continue exploratory work begun in the
classroom or studio. This grants program supports research on a broad range of topics as a pathway to further research, external partnerships, and
funding. With the support of RISD Research, recipients will be provided with the resources, support, and dialogue to further guide them through a
successful and insightful research process.
What We Fund
Faculty and students to pursue topics initiated in the academic programs at RISD and for which extended research development might:
a) Advance an area of inquiry begun in the classroom or studio.
b) Further develop an established line of inquiry or body of research to reach a new level of impact for the researcher, RISD, or identified external
community.
Grant Amounts and Terms
RISD Bridge Grants are awarded in amounts between $5,000-$10,000 to be used during the summer. Stipends may not exceed $2,500 per student,
and $5,000 for faculty.
The fellowship must fund the work of the researcher and one enrolled RISD student.
Material expenses that are beyond doing business as an artist or designer, and are not otherwise provided by RISD, are allowable.
Expenses for materials are allowable. However, the grants do not fund expenses otherwise provided by the applicant’s division or through other
available resources at the college, or those considered “cost of doing business.” The fellowship may be used to support or reimburse expenses for
travel, room, or board if deemed essential to the project.
Successful grant awardees will be required to produce and present a research poster on their project at the end of the summer at an internal
workshop hosted by RISD Research. Poster and workshop guidelines will be provided at the time of the initial grant award.
Upon successful completion of the summer grant period, if all outcomes have been successfully fulfilled, researchers may be eligible for continued
funding in the amount of $5,000 to be used during the academic year to further the work begun during the summer grant period. Activities could
include presenting at a conference, supporting a publication, obtaining a patent, further research and development, prototyping, or similar.
