Quantitative Reasoning
SPRING 2016

Prerequisite:
A recent (within the last two years) Math ACT of 23 or a grade of C or better in Math
1010 or 1020 within the last two years. (This course does fill the requirement for
general education.)
Objective:
Exploration of contemporary mathematical thinking, motivated by its application to
problems in modern society; emphasizes development of skill in analytical reasoning.
This course is designed not only to meet the University general education requirements
but also to generate a positive attitude toward and an interest in mathematics.

Students will use appropriate formulas to compare different
loan options and to compare probabilities of events.
Students will evaluate the fairness of the outcome of an
election under different voting methods.
Students will use mathematical reasoning to solve applied
problems involving finances, probability, and TSPs.
Students are able to recognize and use forms of valid and
invalid arguments.

How to get started with the course:
 Log onto Canvas and set up your communication stream for the course. For
example, after setting up your profile on Canvas, any course announcement or
messages from Canvas can go directly to your mobile device (cell phone, tablet,
laptop computer…etc) or email instantly.
 The course online communication between you and I is very important; any
course schedule updates will be announced through Canvas. Any online
communication between you and I will be through the Canvas inbox or
discussion board. I always answer students’ messages within a day on Canvas
each school day during the semester. If I have not responded to your email or
message for more than a day, then it means I did not receive it.













instructs you on how to purchase your ebook/ MyMathLab bundle.
I will help you to get on MyMathLab.com, and how to use the online
assignments and learning resources on MyMathLab .
You are required to take a timed pre-test online during the first week of the
semester. It is for teaching assessment purposes only. The score will not
affect your grade.
Use the video lecture, my study plan and learning resources on MyMathLab.
My study plan on MyMathLab is a good resources and the score there does not
affect your grade.
Participate in the group discussion on Canvas.
Submit your homework on time.
Take your chapter pre-tests/midterm exams/final exam on time
Course event updates will be announced on Canvas Announcement.

Expect about 2 hours of homework for each credit hour for the course. I encourage you to
collaborate on homework. Homework will be submitted online using MyMathLab.com.
You are required to purchase the MyMathLab access code to complete your course
homework.
There will be eight midterm exams during the semester and one closed book
comprehensive final exam. Missed unexcused exams will be scored as zero. If you have
an emergency or illness, you are required to send me an email and state the reason before
the test date ends. All tests will be taken online at MyMathLab.com. You are allowed to
use a calculator and one 4x6 note card.
The closed book comprehensive final exam will be held during the final week and it will
be announced during the last week of class. You are allowed to bring a calculator and
one 4x6 note card.
If you are taking the final exam off campus, you are required to take your final at an
official testing center as approved by the instructor. You are also required to contact the
course instructor to arrange the off campus final exam by April 8, 2016.
All off campus final exam arrangements must be arranged and scheduled by April 15,
2016. The off campus final exam must be taken by Tuesday, April 26, 2016.
Otherwise, you are expected to take the final exam on campus with the class at SUU
Testing Center, ELC 2nd floor.
