Community and Visitor Education and Interpretation Intern Lake Mead NRA/Great Basin Institute _____________________________________ Member will provide national service at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, a host site for the Nevada Conservation Corps AmeriCorps Program. Description: Working collaboratively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting one intern to assist with development and completion of resource education programs and projects, including a wide range of formal and informal public and school-based education programs and projects. These will include hikes, lectures, demonstrations, field trips, workshops and activities. Venues will include (but not be limited to) classrooms, fairs, trails, beaches, libraries and visitor centers. Programs and projects will educate and inform the public about the significance and uniqueness of park resources, conservation and ecologically sound practices as well as the laws, rules, and regulations developed to protect park resources. Primary Responsibilities: ● Facilitate youth education and outreach; duties include: development and implementation of programs, lesson plans, and learning modules for youth education programs, schedule programs with local school groups, present materials to student groups and collect data associated with attendees, and educational impacts of presented lessons; ● Develop and conduct presentations to volunteer groups about natural resource management practices within the recreation area; ● Provide community members, visitors, and local constituents with information on park resources, conservation and ecologically sound practices as well as the laws, rules, and regulations developed to protect park resources; ● Research scientific, historical, and technical resources to create interpretive programs using a variety of interpretive techniques including 21st Century Interpretive Skills; ● Research historical and archaeological resources to create web pages about specific historic and archaeological topics; and ● Assist cultural resource staff with a variety of tasks including processing archives and data management. Secondary responsibilities: additional tasks and duties that are preferential but secondary ● Collect field data to maintain documentation of activities; and ● Assist staff on developing and modifying outreach materials. Related Responsibilities: 1 of 3 ● ● ● ● ● Participate in trainings provided by Lake Mead NRA staff and community partners; Serve as a front line representative to partners for the National Park Service; Meet with Host Site Supervisor on a regular basis; Participate in community service days organized by NCC Program; and Participate in regular AmeriCorps team meetings. Compensation: This is an AmeriCorps position, and candidates will receive a living stipend of $8,640 for the season. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to members every other week throughout the service term. Upon completion of AmeriCorps service, members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $2,865 that can be used for paying off qualified student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.
