Alg2 Trig Unit 3 Chap 5 Higher Order Polynomials
Day 1 (5.2, 5.8) – What is the end behavior of the graph going to look like based on the
power of the polynomial?
What do the properties of the polynomial tell me in terms of graphing the general
shape? (even, odd, positive, negative, increasing, decreasing, FTA, turning points, domain,
range, y – intercept)
How does the FTA help me in creating the general shape?
Homework: Pg 341, #9-12, 25-36, Pg 390, #15-20 (Instructions – determine the degree
based on end behavior, turns, and roots), 22-25 (Instructions – state the end behavior, # of
roots, and # of turns)
Day 2 (5.7, 5.3) - … still sketching the general shape …
How do the intercepts of the graph help me to graph the general shape?
How do I write the equation of the polynomial given the x – intercepts?
What “rules” do I need to know and follow when using operations on polynomials?
(add, subtract, multiply)
Homework: Pg 390 #3-12, Pg 384, #22-24,26, Pg 349, #21,22, 34,35, 44,45, 59, 60
Day 3 (5.4) – What are the special factoring patterns and how do I use them to help me
solve a polynomial? (grouping, greatest common factor, sum of two cubes, difference of two
cubes, difference of quartics)
How do I decide which special factoring pattern to use?
How does factoring the polynomial help me find and graph the general shape of the
polynomial?
Homework: Pg 356, #4-6, 10,11,14,15, 16, 19-21, 24,26,27, 32-40
Day 4 (5.4, 5.5) – What do you do if the polynomial isn’t factorable? Can I still solve it?
How?
How does synthetic division help us in solving polynomials? (break it down, make it
factorable)
Inclass Worksheet – Factoring Madness
Homework: Pg 357, #51,52,58, 61,62, Pg 366, #13-16, 23-28
Day 5 (5.5) - … more synthetic division …
Long Division … How does polynomial long division help in solving a polynomial?
What does the answer tell me?
Remainder Theorem … What does the remainder theorem tell me? What does that
look like on a graph?
Factor Theorem … What does the factor theorem tell me? What does that look like
on a graph?
How are the remainder theorem and factor theorem related?
Homework: Pg 341, #15-21odd, Pg 366, #5-9, 29-34, 36,37, Pg 391, #39,40,
Day 6 (5.6) – Where do the roots come from? Where do I start if I’m not sure what to do?
(Rational Root Theorem)
Homework: Pg 374, #3-6, 12-15, 25-27, 45, 46
Day 7 – Word Problem Day / Modeling (whole unit)
Homework: Finish Word Problem WS, Prepare your study guide, Pg 398, #25-28
Day 8 – Review Day
Homework: Defend your study guide day, Review Worksheet
Day 9 – Test Day!!!
