Warrior Leadership Academy
Application Form
The Warrior Academy is a project of the Saint Paul Urban Tennis
Program for kids without the financial means to participate in yearround tennis programming at local facilities. Applicants must be
between the ages of 11 and 18 (grades 6 – 12) and receive a
recommendation for participation from their tennis coach. We are looking for kids with
aspirations for success on the tennis court and off with a recommended GPA of at least 3.0.
Accepted students must be able to give at least 40 service hours back to the SPUT program. All
participants will receive training on how to coach others that will help with their own games.
Students will also compete for college scholarships, identify personal strengths, and develop
leadership skills.
Program Nuts and Bolts:
Tennis Instruction: Saturdays, 6pm – 9pm, November – March at LifeTime Athletic Club
in White Bear Lake. We solicit donated indoor court time during off-peak hours for this
program and may be able to add additional opportunities as space is available.
Tennis Competition: Students are encouraged to compete for their high school teams
and will also receive opportunities to compete in USTA Junior Team Tennis and/or
Tournaments.
Quarterly Workshops: One day workshops are held on a Saturday or Sunday in
November, February, May, and August on various topics such as financial literacy, public
speaking, college admissions, and leadership. Students are given an opportunity to
identify needs and select topics that are meaningful to them.
Mentoring: Older students (11th – college) in the program are given the opportunity to
mentor younger students by providing both tennis instruction and academic tutoring.
Adult mentors are also matched with our older students for career exploration in
various fields.
Service: All students must complete at least 40 service hours by assisting with one of
SPUT’s after school programs that take place at local elementary schools, volunteering
at special events, or by serving as a summer reading program volunteer with ages 10U.
Program Value: Approx $1,000 - Students pay anywhere from $5 to full value depending on
financial situation. In 2013, 100% of the kids in the program participated free of charge, but we
are looking at a sliding scale fee structure much like our summer program as we move forward.
Our target audience for this program remains our SPUT summer participants who do not have
the financial means to play elsewhere in the winter.
