CAMBRIDGESHIRE EXAMPLE Click here to visit the linked web page 6.0 – Conduct skills mapping 6.2 – Identify current skills Having identified the skills needed to carry out the activities in the blockage areas of your pathway, this tool can be used to help you establish whether or not your existing workforce has these skills. This information can then be used to conduct a gap analysis, comparing the skills needed to those that the workforce actually has. Identifying skills gaps and overlaps will help to develop workforce solutions to pathway blockages, such as additional training, redeployment or new positions. This template is one of a series related to the step of conducting skills mapping. This will identify gaps between what is required and what exists. RELEVANCE TO WORKFORCE Possessing the skills required to do your job effectively is an important part of job satisfaction and feeling that you are adding value. Engaging with the workforce in a positive way to identify skill gaps should help to improve the level of care they are able to provide, and will also increase job satisfaction. © CfWI | 2011 Modelling the workforce series The template DESCRIPTION OF THE TEMPLATE This template provides you with a framework to determine whether or not your workforce has the skills they require to carry out certain activities effectively. For the purpose of this exercise, we are focussing on activities in the areas which were identified as blockages in stage 5. This information will then be used to conduct a gap analysis – do the people carrying out these activities have the necessary skills to do so effectively? IDENTIFY SKILLS REQUIRED – FRAMEWORK 1. In stage 4 understand the current workforce, you gained an understanding about who was carrying out which activities. Based on this, establish which staff groups are currently carrying out the activities in the bottleneck areas. 2. From the list of skills produced in the previous step, draw up a checklist of the required by different roles along the care pathway. A template is provided below. You can complete a specific checklist for each individual role to compare individual skills and competencies, or a single checklist for all the skills and competencies present in the pathway which will help indicate where other organisations possess skills which might address each bottleneck. 3. Distribute this checklist among the workforce (to as many people as you feel is appropriate, but at least 3 from each staff group) and ask them to indicate which skills they think they have. This should be done anonymously. It should be communicated why this information is being collected and what it will be used for. 4. Collect the completed checklists to feed into the gap analysis template (step 6.3). © CfWI | 2011 Modelling the workforce series Discharge pathway checklist – Discharge Planning Team This checklist is to help us identify possible causes for some the bottlenecks in the discharge care pathway. The checklist is completely anonymous and we would be grateful if you could complete it honestly. Please consider the statements carefully, and circle the response that best matches you. Thank you!
