Resource Course Offerings English Resource Freshman English Course # 8401 A # 8402 B 2 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation This course follows the general education curriculum. This class is required of all freshmen. It continues the basic development of communication skills begun in the middle school. This is a comprehensive course, which provides students with instruction and drill to improve their abilities to read, write, speak and think. Grammar, writing, speech, literature and word study are taught. Each student must write four formal essays to receive credit for the course. Essentials of Algebra Course # 1601 1602 1603 3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation The program teaches essential pre-algebra content and provides students with an introduction to traditional Algebra I content that is cohesive and clear. Graduation requirements assume that students have learned basic geometry (Pythagorean theory, similar triangles), introductory algebra (possibly involving simultaneous equations), solution strategies involving straightline equations on the coordinate system, exponents, signed numbers, facility with problems that refer to fractions, decimals and percents, data tables or graphs, and a wide range of word problems that involve rate, proportion, probability, and algebraic solutions. As such, this program directly and explicitly teaches such concepts necessary for success in Algebra I. Other Resource Courses Resource Study Skills 1-3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation Course # 8383 # 8384 # 8385 This course is designed for students whose IEPs have determined the need for daily curricular teacher support. The class includes the teaching of specific learning strategies as well as opportunities for the following: Guided study assistance, homework and project completion, test and quiz completion, one-on-one tutoring, time management and organizational assistance, academic enrichment activities, development of effective individual learning strategies and routines, support of IEP goals and identified academic needs, and self-determination activities. Students receive a Credit/No Credit grade for this course based on receiving 75% or higher on graded skill development activities and on-task behaviors, time management, and participation. 16 Essential Skills Course # 0608 3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation Essential skills is a course designed to help students increase their literacy skills. This course will focus on comprehension, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, writing, and motivation. Students are identified through a screening process primarily done at the middle school level and through teacher recommendation. The ultimate goal of this course is to strengthen literacy skills so students can be successful in their core academic courses. Individual Vocational Training 1-3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation This class is open to students with an IEP. This class is job experience within various fields and will be tailored to the students' needs and post-high school outcomes. Placement into this class must be done through the IEP process. Certificate of Completions Offerings Placements in the following classes are based on recommendation of an IEP and must be signed by the Case Manager. These classes are not considered as preparation for the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) and are not for diploma track students. Adaptive Course Offerings Adaptive Home Living Course # 8004 8005 8006 3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation This course focuses on using a functional curriculum to teach basic home living skills. The purpose of the course is to help give students the skills necessary to be successful after graduation. Some of the skill sets that are focused on are: doing laundry, cooking, safety and awareness, and janitorial services. Adaptive Academics Course # 8000 8001 8002 3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation This course uses a functional curriculum that is individualized to meet the goals and needs of each student in the class. The purpose is to give the student real life situations that directly relate to the areas of math and English. Adaptive Recreation and Leisure Course # 8280 3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation This course focuses on teaching students how to choose appropriate recreation and leisure activities independently. The purpose is to help students identify activities that they enjoy doing, be able to locate them in the community, and participate in them independently. Community Based Instruction (CBI) 3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation This course consists of students going to various job sites with a job coach. The purpose is to teach students the skills necessary to complete each job with the needed supervision. The skills that are being taught directly relate to jobs that students will then have in the future and this is their preparation for such jobs. 17 Applied Course Offerings Applied English Applied English IV Course# 8204 3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation This course is designed to meet one of the four years of English credit required for a certificate of completion. It is offered on a four year rotation with Applied English 1-3. The curriculum is a modified class that parallels the Mason High English courses. All benchmarks and common core standards are covered, but may be modified to meet the needs of the students. It continues the basic development of communication skills begun in the middle school and continues with the skills taught in the other Applied English classes. This comprehensive course, which provides students with instruction and drill to improve their abilities to read, to write, to speak and to think. This course relies heavily on grammar, writing, speech, literature and words study. Students are required to read common text and write common paper(s) for credit. Applied Math Applied Math IV Course# 8218 3 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation Applied Math is designed to meet the math requirement of Mason High School for a certificate of completion. It is offered on a four year rotation with Applied Math 1, 2 and 3. The course continues to emphasize mastery of the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) as well as an understanding of fractions, decimals, percents, measurement, money, and time. Story problems and practical life skills will be presented throughout, furthering their mathematic skills. Applied Math I, II, III and IV rely heavily on the PCI Real World Series. Emphasis is on applying mathematics to banking, contracts, budgeting and jobs. Applied Science Applied Life Science Course # 8225 2 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation Offered alternate years, this course covers classification of living organisms, with an emphasis on both plant and animal life. Students will study body structure and function, with the opportunity to learn lab techniques while performing experiments. This course relies heavily on the PCI Real World Series. Applied Social Studies Applied World History Course# 8243 2 trimesters Case Manager Recommendation Applied World History is a required two trimester course in which students study the history of the world, from the fall of the Roman Empire through the present day. Special emphasis and modifications will be placed upon the history of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, in addition to the development of Europe and the Americas. Additionally, students will explore specific geographic information about world regions and fundamental geographic concepts. 18 Other Applied Courses Applied Life Management Course # 8228 1 trimester Case Manager Recommendation This course is designed to improve the skills necessary to enhance independent living and improve upon functional adult living skills in the area of food preparation. Areas of study include kitchen safety, meal planning and preparation, nutrition, and grocery shopping. Other topics will include financial responsibilities, self-advocacy, social awareness, and expressing oneself. Applied Computers Course# 8229 1 trimester Case Manager Recommendation This course is designed to fulfill the graduation requirement of all students in computer literacy. Emphasis will be on basic keyboarding skills, word processing, and care of computers. Students will explore basic functions of Word, Power Point, and Excel. Applied Marriage and Family Course # 8284 1 trimester Case Manger Recommendation/guardian approval This course is designed to improve the skills necessary for informed decision-making as it relates to responsible adults living in interpersonal relationships. Students will acquire accurate information and explore personal values on family life, dating, marriage, divorce, reproduction, family planning, sexually transmitted diseases (including AIDS), parenting and child development. Applied Health Course# 1 trimester Case Manger Recommendation/guardian approval This course is designed to provide instruction in first aid, disease, drug use and misuse, proper use of medications, sexuality, reproductive systems, development, maturity and overall health issues.
