AP CALCULUS AGREEMENT - Doral Academy Preparatory

advertisement

Dear Parents and Students,

The Advanced Placement Calculus Program consists of a college level class designed for highly motivated students in secondary school. More than 2,900 universities and colleges worldwide grant credit and/or advanced placement to students who perform satisfactorily on the AP Exam. Our goal is to work together (parent, student and teacher), to obtain excellent results.

I have had nearly 100% of our students pass the AP Exam since I started teaching AP calculus in 2011. Most students earn a “5”, the highest score possible on an AP exam. Most major universities place great credibility on a score of a “5” in the AP Exam. Yes, our first goal is for students to learn calculus and be successful when they get to college, but we also want to make them feel confident that they cannot only learn calculus, but that they can be successful and get the highest possible score.

How can we be so successful?

We have designed our mathematics curriculum and honors classes to make our students grow, become mathematically mature, and be ready to take on the challenge of such difficult and high-level courses as AP

Calculus AB and BC. In addition, many students by participating in mathematics competitions develop their mathematical skills beyond what is usually covered in a mathematics class.

Why a contract?

The reason for this contract is for you and your son / daughter to review and make the commitment of hard work and dedication this class requires. Please read carefully as it includes some after school and Saturday meetings students should not miss (arrangements can be made in special situations ahead of time). I am happy and willing to dedicate this additional time and effort to your child so that they will be successful.

What do we need?

All I need is a commitment from you and your child. My system works–it has already proven to be successful!

Let us work together for another superb year!

The Plan:

The following actions are highly recommended to achieve success on the AP Calculus AB Exam.

Class Attendance :

Perfect attendance, punctuality to class, and being eager and ready to learn are a must.

Study time:

Two hours minimum daily study time, homework, and study in preparation for the following lesson.

Tutoring:

Come for tutoring before or after school when necessary. Students are responsible for making the time to get help once or twice a week if they know they need it. Students cannot wait until April to get help and expect success. After school activities/sports or jobs will limit access to getting extra help they might need. We may recommend private tutoring for weaker students.

Quizzes & Tests: Students must maintain good scores on all quizzes. Quizzes will be on any topics learned in Calculus AB. (no notes/book can be used).

Homework:

Homework will not be graded everyday; however, students need to have their homework available for checking or grading at any time without announcement . Students, who do not do their homework each night, tend to do poorly on quizzes, tests, and the AP Exam.

Materials: The following materials should be brought to class daily:

3-ring binder with loose leaf and graph paper

Graphing calculator

Barron’s and/or George Best book (Later on)

Pencils & Erasers

After Hours Participation : Students must attend all after class Mock tests; attendance is a must.

We can make accommodations ahead of time for special situations/circumstances. These must be preapproved. The tentative schedule is enclosed.

Integrity : Adherence to the adopted Ethical Academic Behavior in Advanced Placement Calculus

Class contained in this Contract.

ETHICAL ACADEMIC BEHAVIOR IN ADVANCED PLACEMENT CALCULUS

I am proud of our rigorous and excellent math program. Over the years, we have built our reputation on the integrity of our students and teachers. Our students continued success in our Calculus Advanced Placement course, is confirmation our high standards contribute greatly to our success. Much of our success depends on the continued virtues of honesty and integrity our students possess. In order to encourage honesty and discourage students from cheating or being otherwise dishonest on any assigned task, whether the task is an in-class or take-home assignment, quiz, or test, we are implementing the following policy:

A student found cheating on any assigned task, whether the task is an in-class or take-home assignment, quiz, or test will be subject to the following minimum consequences:

On the first offense:

The student will receive an automatic zero on the aforementioned task,

The student's parent(s) will be notified, and

The teacher will report the incident to the National Honor Society and other National Honor

Societies.

On the second offense:

The student will receive an automatic zero on the aforementioned task,

The student's parent(s) will be notified, and

The student referred to the appropriate administrator and a referral is written which will be recorded on the Discipline Panel. The Discipline Panel becomes part of a student’s permanent record which affects college applications.

We want all our students to continue working to their full potential and to represent their work honestly. We are confident our concerted efforts will ensure your success as a math student at

Doral Academy High School.
