Unit 1: Study of Matter (Approx. 9 weeks)
Name: ____________________________________
Block: ______ Due Date: _____________________
Goals:
Classification of Matter - (Chapters 2,3.1)Be able to explain the relationship between matter, atoms, and elements. Distinguish between elements and
compounds. Describe molecules, and explain how they are formed. Interpret and write some common chemical formulas. Categorize materials as pure
substances or mixtures. Distinguish between the physical and chemical properties of matter, and give examples of each. Perform calculations involving density.
Describe characteristic properties and give examples. Explain physical and chemical changes. Summarize the main points of the kinetic theory of matter.
Describe how temperature relates to kinetic energy and particle movement. Explain exothermic and endothermic energy changes.
Atoms / Periodic trends of the elements - (Chapters 4) Be able to explain the model of the atom. Determine how many protons, neutrons, and electrons an
atom has, given its symbol, atomic number, and mass number. Explain why some atoms gain or lose electrons to form ions. Describe the properties of an
isotope. Relate an element’s chemical properties to the electron arrangement of its atoms.
Bonding and Compounds - (Chapter 5) Relate the chemical formula of a compound to the relative numbers of atoms or ions present in the compound. Explain
why atoms sometimes join to form bonds. Explain why some atoms transfer their valence electrons to form ionic bonds, while other atoms share valence
electrons to form covalent bonds. Differentiate between ionic and covalent bonds. Name and write compounds for simple ionic and covalent compounds.
Reactions of Matter - (Chapter 6 / 9) Recognize signs of chemical reactions. Distinguish among five general types of chemical reactions. Predict the products of
some reactions based on the reaction type. Describe reactions. Describe the differences between endothermic and exothermic reactions. Demonstrate how to
balance chemical reactions. Identify nuclear radiation and properties of radiation. Calculate the half-life of a radioactive isotope. Distinguish between fission and
fusion, and provide examples of each. Describe beneficial uses of radiation.
