LIBRARY NEWS
On December 31, 2013, the deadline will be reached in our efforts to collect
$3 million dollars to help renovate the interior of the library. We have done
well so far in our efforts but we are still coming up a bit short. To date, we
have raised over $2.5 million dollars from donations and private
investments. For those donations we are grateful. This shows us that the
people of the greater Bangor area appreciate their library and understand
that libraries still hold a valuable role in the community. For our part, we
are hoping to exceed your expectations and bring this great library to new,
unlimited potential by increasing the amount of space we have to offer for
meetings and other community events. We are hoping to make this library
more digital-friendly to meet the needs of our tech-savvy patrons. We are
hoping to make the general asthetic more appealing and more user-friendly.
However, our hopes will only get us so far. We are still in need of $490,000
by December 31st to ensure that we get the matching $3 million dollar grant
from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation. If we do not reach this goal
by December 31, we will not receive the matching grant and the renovation
process will be halted. We know what resounding effort the great people of
Bangor and the surrounding communities have put into this campaign but
we need just a little bit more; one last push to put us over that $3 million
dollar mark. So, please, if you have not already donated or know someone
who would like to make a great investment in the community, make a
donation to the Bangor Public Library. Together, we can make this great
library even greater.

You Still Have Time To Get Your
Bangor Metro Subscription
The Bangor Metro, like many other great local businesses, is offering to help
raise money for the library's campaign to fundraise enough money to
revamp and remodel the interior of our building. For every subscription the
Bangor Metro receives--either with a code provided on bookmarks available
at the library, or by phone--the Metro will donate $10.00 to the Library's
Capital Campaign. We are very grateful for every donation received.
Bookmarks will be available in the Library at both the Children's and Adult's
Circulation Desk. The Bangor Metro is a great magazine covering news and
events in the Bangor area. This magazine would make a great holiday gift
for anyone on your holiday gift list. Get your holiday shopping done and
help a great cause at the same time.

Visiting Authors
Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from 5:30-6:30 pm in the Lecture Hall
Willow Brook by Sherry Auger
Willow Brook is Sherry Auger's debut novel. She has had short stories,
fiction and non-fiction, published online and in children's magazines. Using
her degrees in Biology and Chemistry she co-authored science workbooks for
children who are home-schooled. She is a member of SCBWI, Society of
Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators, Maine Writers and Publishers, and
several online writers' groups. Sherry lives in a small town in Maine with her
husband, Richard, her mother, and a spoiled Maine Coon cat. She has two
grown children with children of their own.
About the book: When school let out for the summer of her last year in
middle school, fourteen year old Janet Marley had no idea that her life was
about to change forever. She was ready to run away. Her mother died
when she was seven and she had raised herself because her father, Judge
Jonathan Marley, was still grieving. As she set out that night, strange things
were happening in the sleepy town of Willow Brook, Maine. It was
undergoing a transformation; buildings were fading, the landscape was
different, and she was feeling a tug towards the woods. Janet is catapulted
into the seventeenth century and comes face to face with the ghost of one of
her ancestors who was hung at the age of six, accused of being a witch
during the Salem witch trials. Janet learns that if she doesn't remain in the
past, she will not have a future.
Thursday, December 5, 2013 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Lecture Hall
Our Seas of Fear and Love by Richard Shaine Cohen
Richard Shain Cohen of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, is originally
from Boston. He retired from the University of Maine at Presque Isle after
serving as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Professor of English. He
holds B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. He served as editor of the journal
Husson Review and was principal participant in a National Endowment for
the Arts Grant for “Images of Aroostook” that was exhibited throughout the
State of Maine.
About the book: Our Seas of Fear and Love is a romance-family saga set
primarily in Maine but also in Europe, Boston, and the Southwest. Calm and
stormy seas are emblematic of the characters, their influence upon one
another, and the conflicts and love expressed among the four main
characters – Brigit, Deirdre, Gregory and Étienne Moreau, a man who
searches out art treasures to sell to museums. Étienne takes as his partner
Deirdre, a dark haired, vivacious beauty he meets during World War II when
she was an SS member and he was head of a Maquis group. Brigit, an
extremely attractive red-haired woman and nurse cares for Gregory,
wounded during the war, and who becomes a well-known medical
researcher. Gregory and Brigit have fallen in love and plan their marriage.
Deirdre then sets her sight on Gregory, ignoring her lover and partner
Étienne, and a conflict occurs between the two women. In the end, the
effects of love triumph in contrast to vainness that damages self and others
as the seas of fear and love engulf all.
Bangor Play Reading Group
Tuesday, December 10, 2013 from 5:30-8:00 pm and Saturday,
December 14, 2013 from 2:00-5:00 pm in the Lecture Hall
Whether you love great modern drama, or have never read a play, you are
welcome to come and join us for fun, interesting reading and conversation.
All are welcome to read, or just listen. No experience necessary. Scripts will
be provided. Most meetings will be in the Board Room on the 1st level:
check with the desk on arrival. This month the group will be reading the play
The Rover, by Aphra Behn
About the Play: Based on Thomas Killigrew's play Thomaso, or The
Wanderer (1664), The Rover features multiple plot lines, dealing with the
amorous adventures of a group of Englishmen in Naples at Carnival time.
The "rover" of the play's title is Willmore, a rakish naval captain, who falls in
love with a young woman named Hellena, who has set out to experience
love before her brother sends her to a convent. Complications arise when
Angellica Bianca, a famous courtesan, falls in love with Willmore and swears
revenge on him for his betrayal.
Meanwhile, Hellena's sister Florinda attempts to marry her true love, Colonel
Belvile, rather than the man her brother has selected. The third major plot of
the play deals with the provincial Blunt, who becomes convinced that a girl
has fallen in love with him but is humiliated when she turns out to be a
prostitute and a thief.

BOOK GROUPS
Lit Chicks: Our Lit Chick Book Group is the library's more traditional book
group. Led by Maggie, one of our wonderful reference librarians, the group
meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 2:00 pm. All the reads are
chosen by Maggie and lean toward contemporary and literary fiction. Please
be aware that participants are not limited to females, but the book selections
may be decidedly feminine. The next meeting will be Tuesday, December
3, 2013 in the Lecture Hall and the book being discussed will be The Big
Girls by Susanna Moore.
Military History Group: If you are interested in military history, you are
invited to join with others to discuss books on the topic. We gather all
history enthusiasts for some great military discussions. We read and discuss
all books, old or new, fiction or non-fiction, from the ancient world to the
present. This is a relaxed group, facilitated by Bill Cook, from the library’s
Local History Department. Members will read what interests them and then
talk about it in the group. The next meeting will be on Wednesday,
December 4, 2013.
Not Your Ordinary Book Group: We read popular fiction, edgy and
uncensored, and meet once a month on Thursday nights at 6:00 pm. This is
NOT your traditional literary fiction book group. All books are chosen by our
members, with an initial online vote to narrow down our choices. The final
books are decided in person at the meetings. The next meeting will be on
Thursday, December 5, 2013. The books being discussed with be The
Ocean At the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman and Cinder by Marissa
Meyer.
Field’s Pond Book Group: Join Joyce Rumery to discuss books and topics
that deal with environmental issues. For more information, contact Joyce
Rumery by phone: 581-1655, or email: rumery@maine.edu. The group
will not meet again until February. Check back next month to see which
