Every year, on this 2nd Sunday of Lent, why do we hear about
the Transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain top? Jesus
revealed his glory to the three apostles and they realised how
wonderful it is to be with him. They were strengthened for the
journey ahead - to Jerusalem, Gethsemane and Golgotha. The
same vision is offered to us, to strengthen us in our Lenten
Journey of Faith. We are driven onwards by a vision of the glory
that will be ours - the goal of our lives of faith and all that we do
as Christians. The transfiguration represents the final
destination of our lives. Jesus will transform us to live each day
as His faithful disciples. During our Lenten journey of renewal
and renewed commitment, we are spurred on and encouraged
by today's vision and by the words - `This is my Son ... Listen to
him.’
Prayers for Pope Benedict XVI
At the conclusion of his ministry as Bishop of Rome,
Benedict will abdicate on Thur 28th Feb at 7.00 pm.
We wish him a long and happy retirement.

All week we will be taught simple lessons by Jesus of how to be his
followers. Jesus predicts his passion but his disciples misunderstand, he
says, “whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.”
Jesus warns the religious leaders through parables and concludes, “The
Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that
will produce its fruit.” Are we producing this fruit?
While tax collectors and sinners are being drawn to Jesus the Pharisees
complain, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So Jesus
tells them the wonderful parable of the Prodigal Son.

If we are struggling in our Lenten discipline it is good to reflect that there is
meaning even in the failure - a reminder that we cannot save ourselves.
Part of the power of Lent is that we do it together, and although individuals
decide on different ways it is fundamentally the same journey. We fall, we
get up, we keep moving.
The desire to `give something up’ is an age-old impulse but we must move
more deeply into the meaning and message of acts of sacrifice; there is no
shame in stumbling, as long as we are not discouraged by the failure and
give up. We all need to clear space in our lives and some things we desire
to give up are worth rooting out completely.
What do we do with the space we have cleared out? The Lenten question
of what are we giving up is balanced by the Easter question of our response
to Christ’s embrace of us in love: “What are you taking on for Easter?”

World War 2 Evacuees. Are there any former evacuees still in the Cluster
Parishes? Perhaps the younger generation may know of parents or other relatives
who were evacuated during the early days of the war. We would like to get as
much information as possible on the places that they were sent and the teachers
who accompanied them. It is of particular interest to establish if any pupils were
sent to a convent in the Lake District - perhaps St Anthony's pupils? Any
information would be appreciated to gerardgrey@hotmail.co.uk or hand in at
