Functions of B12




Vitamin B12 is an important molecule in both the nervous system (for mental functioning) and in carbohydrate
metabolism (the production of energy)
Deficiency of Vitamin B12 has been linked to fatigue, inability to concentrate, changes in memory, and
depression
Injections of B12 have also been shown to improve symptoms associated with inflammatory changes including
bursitis and sciatica, and to decrease homocysteine levels, a bio-maker which signals increased risk for heart
disease and store.
Vitamin B12 has been shown to decrease symptoms of fatigue, including that associated with Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome and Fibromyalgia

As we age, our body’s ability to digest foods high in B12 (beef, eggs, chicken) diminishes

for proper absorption, a property unique to B12 as opposed to our other vitamins
B12 by intramuscular injection by-passes both the digestive and absorptive mechanisms that decrease with age
so that the benefits of this valuable nutrient can be utilized
Digestion of meats high in vitamin B12 is inhibited by certain medications, common examples include H2
blockers and other reflux medications. In addition, Glucophages used for blood sugar control decrease B12
absorption.
HOW OFTEN CAN YOU RECEIVE AN INJECTION….
Frequency of injections depends on both presentation and response. Generally, injections are recommended monthly,
however we sometimes suggest a weekly dose for a few weeks before beginning monthly injections. If not already a
patient, a brief questionnaire must be filled out prior to your first injection.
