School Board:
Phillips Preparatory School Renovation Support “Resolution”
The Parent, Teacher, and Student Association (PTSA) for Phillips Preparatory School (PPS) is sending this
“resolution” to the Mobile County School Board, its’ Superintendent, and other likely interested parties.
(Note: the final wording of the “resolution” below was note voted on before the supporting signer affixed
his/her signature.)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Whereas PPS is a magnet middle school within the Mobile County Public School system;
Whereas PPS has gained its second national “Blue Ribbon School” designation;
Whereas PPS is a “Title I” school;
Whereas PPS students have routinely scored at the highest levels of standardized tests whether those tests are
county, state, or national;
Whereas PPS has been recognized as the top middle school within the state of Alabama;
Whereas PPS’s Principal, Brenda Hartzog, and her dedicated faculty and staff provide students with a
tremendous education;
Whereas PPS has education rooms unfit for the technology desired (rooms having only two
electrical outlets, creating fire/safety hazards with multiple extension cord use in each classroom);
Whereas PPS’s band room is so substandard that the former superintendent, Dr. Nichols stated “it needs
to be torn down”;
Whereas there is no air conditioning unit in the kitchen such that the health department has threatened
to “shut” the kitchen down;
Whereas the lighting in the gymnasium is so outdated that replacement bulbs are very difficult to find
and produce such poor lighting that the entire system needs to be replaced;
Whereas the air conditioner unit in the gymnasium leaks on the floor;
Whereas PPS’s entrance drive and east parking lots need paving;
Whereas PPS’s exterior is sorely in need of re-painting; and
Whereas PPS was built more than 50 years ago, such that it is time for a major renovation;
Whereas it is understood that the last renovation on the campus was 21 years ago.
Be it resolved that I, the undersigned, as a concerned parent/teacher/friend-of-PPS am writing you to
provide allocated funds to adequately renovate the county’s two time awarded National Blue Ribbon
middle school in the upcoming school year, 2012-2013.
Therefore, I, the undersigned, am petitioning the Mobile County Public School System and its serving board
members and superintendent to address the above issues in this year’s distribution of allocated capital funds
scheduled for discussion in early August, 2012.
