NicoNixRx (tradmark symbol after if available) The first and only transdermal smoking cessation cream (banner)

Let’s face it we all know as a surgeon just how difficult convincing a patient to quit smoking in preparation for their upcoming procedure can be. We also know smoking before surgery puts the patient at a higher risk for postoperative heart attacks, blood clots, pneumonia and even death.

Quitting 4 to 6 weeks before a patient operation and staying smoke-free 4 weeks after it can decrease their rate of wound complications by 50 percent. (American College of

Surgeons)

The good news is that an upcoming surgery can be just the motivation a smoker needs to finally kick the habit.

 If you smoke up until the time of surgery you are very unlikely to quit after surgery. It is best to quit at least one month prior to surgery.

 The more you smoke before surgery, the harder it will be to

 maintain abstinence post-operatively

The longer you are abstinent from smoking before surgery, the more likely you will stay abstinent after surgery

In some cases surgeons do require their patients take a urine test prior to surgery to ensure there is no nicotine in their system and they have indeed quit smoking. This approach minimizes both surgeon’s liability as well as patients experiencing poor wound healing, infection, and an overall less satisfactory outcome.
