DTCP Collective Goal Messaging Points To save and heal more lives by increasing the number of organs transplanted by 5,000 over the next 5 years Background: The Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice (DTCP) Strategic Planning Committee, comprised of many organizations, including OPOs, transplant centers, donor hospitals and government agencies came together to develop a collective goal to increase the number of transplants across the nation. The donation and transplantation community is committed to a national culture of donation and transplantation where each individual has the opportunity to donate and the intention of those who are designated donors is honored 100% of the time. This culture will result in more lives saved through successful transplantation each year. To that end, each donation and transplantation organization will work to: Enhance collaboration and communications among partner organizations to maximize scarce resources Promote the education and training of healthcare professionals to build a culture of donation and transplantation in each hospital Collaborate with the OPTN, CMS, and private payors to redefine performance metrics that promote increased transplantation and protect patient safety Foster best practices and share them among the donation and transplantation community Recognize excellence in high performing donor hospitals, transplant centers and organ procurement organizations Recommendations on how each organization can increase the number of transplants: Ensure all organizational strategies and activities established contribute to increasing transplants. Participate in activities to raise awareness about donation and transplantation and to increase donor registry sign-ups. Maximize each donation and transplantation opportunity within your organization. Consider missed donation and transplantation opportunities as a lack of fulfilment of accountability to those awaiting transplants, each missed opportunity should result in process improvement actions. On an annual basis, the SRTR will provide data illustrating achievement towards the collective goal. Upon receiving the data, organizations are encouraged to: Post the data on your organizational website, in your print and electronic communications, and via social media. Share the data and inspirational slides at meetings and during webinars. Communicate achievement towards the goal at your local and regional meetings, conferences, and with your Board of Directors and staff. Ask membership to renew their efforts to increase transplantation by continuing to focus on the above recommendations. Share the Stories A valuable tool among the donation and transplantation community is our ability to share stories that motivate and remind us of the life saving work we do each day. Use these following stories as a way to remind your colleagues of the goal and our efforts to increase the number of transplants. The Alliance hosts a page on their websites where healthcare professionals and those working within the donation and transplantation field can share their stories. Encourage your colleagues to share their stories at http://organdonationalliance.org/your-stories/.
