ISU Extension and Outreach 4-H Aquatic Robot Pilot Program 2014 SUBJECT: Workshop for SeaPerch Aquatic Robot building and training pilot PURPOSE: To provide Aqua Robotics Team Training, experiential knowledge and an interactive platform for hands-on learning opportunities in: Engineering- by designing and building their own remote operated aqua robot Biology- by conducting water sampling and observing habitat Physics- through designing for buoyancy and use of electrical wiring BACKGROUND: On March 29, 2014 the first 4-H Aquatic Robotics Building Session will attract nine Western Iowa County 4-H teams. As part of a grant funded by the AUVSI Foundation, our County 4-H’ers will build a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV), also known as a SeaPerch aquatic robot, valued at $450.00. The 4-H Aquatic Robotics educational program provides youth grades 7-10 with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics (STEM) while building an underwater ROV as part of a science and engineering technology curriculum and research project. After 4-H’ers have built and tested their ROV at a local indoor pool, they will continue to practice local waters navigation during the Spring, Summer, and Fall of 2014 while taking part in a water quality research project. Additional training and support webinars will occur throughout the year to equip the 4-H teams to use their aquatic robots to explore their local environment. Upon completion of the grant required research the County Extension District will own the aqua robots. DISCUSSION: < County Name> would like to send a 4-H team that consists of 2-4 youth members. Teams will have 1-2 adult volunteer coaches. The cost per county team is $135.00. Cost will cover training, National 4-H Curriculum, lunch, supper, and snacks throughout the training day, extra supplies not included the ROV kit, entry fee to rec center to test ROV, and additional training and support webinars. RECOMMENDATION: Request is to pay $135.00 for the team expenses to attend this training. A request is to also pay volunteers a one-time flat stipend of $100 to help travel fees incurred during the research project and training.
