Mobile Money Reader for Visually Impaired People
Description (extra sheets can be added)
Although credit cards and other electronic forms of payment is frequently used for trading, remarkable amount of payments is
performed via cash since it creates a perception among people such that the use of cash is convenient, secure and anonymous.
However, visually impaired people usually have some difficulties to recognize banknotes which results in wrong preparation of
wage, mistaken payments and vulnerability to be cheated by malicious individuals. This projects aims to develop a mobile
application that can be easily used on mobile phones or tablet computers in order to help impaired people to recognize cash and
inform by voice. The project is planned to finalize in several stages:
1 – Getting familiar with image processing algorithms and performing a research on recognition methods and literature survey.
Literature survey will cover money recognition on ATMs and mobile phones. In addition to this, if there is any application for
visually impaired people, subject will be researched and it will be adapted to Turkish banknotes. Object recognition techniques
will be researched, will be found general information and scientific articles.
2 – A pilot study realized on non-mobile and suitable environments such as MATLAB to complete research and development
which works on still images and Turkish banknotes. There are many ways to process image such as C, C++ and Java however
MATLAB enviroment was chosen. Because the most easy way to develop image processing algorithms can be performed on
MATLAB. Most appropriate and efficient algorithm will be developed on MATLAB.
3 – Research on image processing and voice synthesis libraries and tools which can be utilized on mobile devices. On Android
phones, an interface will be created. This interface does not have to be so complicated. Instead of a complicated interface, voiced
commands will be used mostly. Voice synthesis subject will be researched. To supply visually impaired people’s requirements,
voice techniques was chosen. “OK Google” example will be taken as a referance.
4 – Porting the core program into mobile environment and develop a fully functional product. Candidates are preferred to be
competent in linear algebra, analytic geometry, MATLAB, C/C++ and Java programming languages.
Justification
Novelty
Version: July 2015
Despite a significant research has been made on cash recognition problem, there is no mobile application
in use specifically designed for impaired individuals which recognizes Turkish banknotes. Voice
techniques will be included to open the application and tell amount of money.

The project has multiple aspects to help the students to improve their different skills in mathematics and
computer science. The students will be able to develop an application of linear algebra and analytic
geometry since it involves pattern recognition techniques. They will also be informed of capabilities of
mobile environments while dealing with complex engineering problems on a mobile device. Application
will work on worn and folded banknotes correctly. It will work on a few banknotes at the same time. It
will answer voiced commands to open the application and tell amount of money.
This work has significance since it is a social responsibility project. The proposed application cannot be
used for fraud detection and the project does not cover encryption and watermarking techniques used on
paper bills. The developed algorithms must be applicable on mobile devices and the application must be
easy to use by an individual without a sight. The requirements regarding development process is very cost
effective. A moderate pc and smart phone are sufficient.
Since the project involves both image processing algorithm and mobile application development, the
students may possibly encounter many difficulties until they finalize the end product. The students are
expected to complete at least the pilot study which is described in the project description due to time
consuming but essential theoretical study.
