I am currently seeking a position within a hospital pathology laboratory where I can expand on my

The course in Computer Applications and Office Skills has provided me with the skills necessary to devise
solutions using commonly used IT tools to increase office productivity wherever possible, including tasks
which can be unfamiliar or non-routine. Modules in the programme included Databases, Word Processing,

The 4 year degree programme is designed with the career of a Medical Scientist in mind, the first two years
provided me with a foundation of knowledge in each of the specialist disciplines of Medical Laboratory
Science as well as Physics, Mathematics, and IT.
Third year consisted primarily of a 25 week hospital placement, which I undertook at the Coombe Women’s
and Infants University Hospital.
This placement consisted of 5 weeks of full time practical training in each of the specialist departments of
the hospital laboratory. After successful completion of the hospital based training programme there was
then an 8 week course in DIT where I studied Pathophysiology, Immunology and Biochemistry
My final year consisted of more extensive study in my chosen major and minor subjects (Transfusion
Medicine and Cellular Pathology respectively) as well as Molecular Biology, and a 15 week practical research
project and thesis on the effects of nanoparticle exposure in a human dermal model.

consolidated by home study and submission of essays.

This laboratory provides genotyping and antibody testing services for HLA linked disease association studies,
stem cell transplant and the provision of HLA matched platelets
My duties there included:
 Specimen registration for reporting and billing, dealing with sample and request issues and dealing
with telephone queries.
 DNA isolation, quantitation and dilution.
 Data entry for test requests.
 Generation of statistical data for quality management and finance purposes.
 I also gained some experience using PCR Sequence Specific Oligionucleotide (SSO) detection and
array interpretation.

Undergraduate Research Student January 2011- May 2011



In my final year research project I studied the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticle exposure in HaCaT
cells using immunocytochemical staining.
I designed and validated a novel method for quantifying positive staining using computer aided
image analysis by adapting and combining elements of protocols used at other institutions that best
suited my needs.
Skills involved included; Maintenance of cell culture lines, Immunocytochemical staining, making up
laboratory reagents, safe and effective use of chemicals and biological substances and IT skills.
