Short Fiction Persuasive Essay Summative
Learning Goal: I CAN write a five-paragraph essay in MLA format to persuade the audience to read the
short story I have selected.
Success Criteria:
 I will complete the writing process: Brainstorming, Outline, Rough Draft, Polished Final Copy
 I will include quotations from the short story as proof
 I will use in-text referencing according to MLA formatting (page number in brackets)
 I will show evidence of revision and editing
 I will use vocabulary at or above grade 10 academic level
 I will include literary language
 I will use a formal voice for my intended audience
 I will use correct conventions of standard Canadian English: capitalization, spelling, grammar,
punctuation
 I will use correct sentence and paragraph structure
THE PROCESS: There are multiple tasks to complete to ensure the overall success of the Short Fiction
summative. Read instructions very carefully and check off each task once it is completed.
TASK 1 ____ Read the short story “Currents” and the sample essay entitled A Must Read for Any High
School Student: “Currents” by Hannah Bottomy Voskuuil
TASK 2 ____ Annotate the sample essay. Will begin with teacher guidance and then move to small
group work.
TASK 3 ____ Select a short story studied in class that you enjoyed.
TASK 4 ____ Reread the short story and review the six story elements (Narrative Perspective, Setting,
Plot, Conflict, Characterization, and Theme)
TASK 5 ____ Reread the short story and find other literary elements (suspense, foreshadowing,
flashback, imagery, symbols, irony, figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole,
alliteration, onomatopoeia
TASK 6 ____ Complete the brainstorming handout
TASK 7 ____ Complete the outline
TASK 8 ____ Write a rough draft
TASK 9 ____ Proofread and Peer Edit Handout **PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO
THE SUCCESS CRITERIA**
