HONORS COLLEGE APPLICATION
FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN
Southern Connecticut State University
The Honors College application and prepared essay (see item II on the Honors College application) must
be received by the Honors College no later than December 1, 2014 for you to be considered for
January’s Honors College Admissions Day. Incoming freshmen must also complete and submit their
SCSU undergraduate application for admission by December 10, 2014. The undergraduate application
for admission, including the Common Application can be found at
https://www.southernct.edu/admissions/application.
Applicants will be scored on SAT or ACT scores (minimum 1050 combined verbal and math SAT or
23 ACT score recommended), high school achievements and activities, and the Honors College prepared
essay. Students with the top composite scores will be invited to participate in Honors College
Admissions Day, scheduled for Saturday, January 24, 2015 (inclement weather date, January 31, 2015).
Those with the highest scores after the Honors College Admissions Day evaluations will be offered a
place in the program for Fall 2015.

II. ESSAY QUESTION:
Write an essay of approximately 750 words on the following topic:
What can students realistically do to help make the world a better
place for all people and to help prevent social injustice? Give specific
examples and describe obstacles that need to be overcome. Cite
evidence to support your claims.
All essays must be word-processed and double-spaced. Be sure to indicate any references used
in your essay. Please put your name, address, phone number and student ID, if known, on the
first page and send it to the Honors College at the address listed at the end of this application.
III. ACTIVITIES AND HIGH SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT:
Provide a resume or list of achievements that indicate your leadership potential and academic
achievements. Please include extra-curricular activities (athletics, creative activities,
participation in clubs, involvement with the arts, etc.), community service, and awards. Also list
any academic achievements, including Honors and AP classes, National Honors Society
memberships, and other educational distinctions.
IV. LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION:
Request a letter of recommendation from one of your high school teachers. The best
recommendations come from teachers who know you well and who can highlight specific
instances of your academic and personal achievements. Recommendations should address
academic progress, leadership ability, potential for growth and personal characteristics that
make you a good candidate for this program. Recommendations must be received no later than
February 1, 2015 in order to be considered as part of your application to the Honors College.
NOTE: If you would like to use the same recommendation you use for your SCSU general
application, you do not need to complete this step.
