PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I hope you all had a chance to come out and see the great job our members and volunteers did at the
Odessa Fair. Congratulations to everyone there!
I am sure you are all busy getting ready for the Napanee Fair, there is so much to do. This year we are having a
lot of new activities so tell all your friends and neighbours to come out and have a great time at the fair. Be sure
to visit the display of rare breeds of animals and the petting zoo animals that are coming. We will have
demonstrations throughout the weekend, contests, the talent show, and bingo for anyone 19 years of age and
over. Bring some extra money and stop by our milk booth and 4-H Mini store which will both be in the Palace all
weekend. Remember projects are due in the project barn on Thursday between 2-4pm or 6-9pm. and then stop in
Friday after 4:00pm to see how you did.
We will all be very busy at the fair, but be sure to take time to have fun, make some new friends and show the
public why we are so proud of our 4-H family.
See you at the fair, Dave McNichols

L&A Family Farm Project
In promoting agriculture in our area this year, L&A 4-H Board Members
have decided to encourage this by means of a "Local Farm History" project.
We are inviting local farm families to put together a project of their family farm to
display at the Napanee Fair this year.
Your project may be displayed on bristol board to be hung up or use a stand up display
board. Please let us know which type of display you will be completing. Include as much as
you like about your history and even include future farming strategies for your farm. Add some
pictures and you're on your way to helping us promote farm awareness, starting right here at
the root, locally!!
Please give your completed project to Leonard Austin 613-388-1105 or
Lisa Hart 613-354-0404 by Wednesday, August 1, 2012.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!!!
It will be a very busy time at the Napanee Fair this year and L&A 4–H
is looking for lots of volunteers! If you are a high school student who still
needs their community hours this will be a perfect time to complete them.
* Call Kathy McNichols at 613-378-0463 to sign up! *

L&A 4–H Goes to Odessa Fair!
Rabbit Club
On 14 July, the 4-H Rabbit Club attended the Odessa Fair to participate in our first rabbit show of the
year. Many of our members are in their first year, so this show was going to be good practice for
them in preparation for their final club achievement at the Napanee Fair. The show was held on
Saturday morning and, thank goodness, we found some shade! Lori Hird, 2011 4-H Rabbit Club leader,
graciously agreed to judge the members. The show began at 10:00 am with the members entering the ring,
properly carrying their rabbit under one arm and their mat under the other. After setting up their rabbits, tucking
and fluffing, Ms. Hird approached each member asking questions about proper housing for rabbits and common
health issues. Then members were asked to perform the basic health check on their rabbit to show both
knowledge and proper handling. Finally, Ms. Hird, had each member rotate their rabbits with another member
and correctly identify several parts of the rabbit. This is done to show the member’s proficiency in handling all
rabbits, not just their own. In the end, Ethan Meise placed first with his rabbit Maggie, and Emily Shelley placed
second with her rabbit Thumper. Both members showed excellent handling techniques and knowledge. All
members did a fantastic job showing their rabbits and we are all looking forward to our achievement show at the
Napanee Fair.
Leaders Johanna & Jonathan Leonhardt
Beef Club
The 2012 Beef Club has 26 members this year and we have had two clinics with Special guests to
help. Our first clinic guest was Brad Snider and our second clinic guest was Beth Storey. The older
members have been helping the new members. This year’s motto is it is all about team work.
We had 16 members attend the Odessa Fair as their first official and everyone did a great job! It is helps the
members to attend one fair before our own achievement day at the Napanee Fair.

different types of Dairy operations, the Port of Prescott Grain elevators, Eastgen and the Agribrands Purina
Manufacturing plant in Addison Ontario.
We were pleased to have Prince Edward Dairy club members join us in the fun and learning.
