Teaching Process at the Department 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th year students of Medical Faculty; 2nd, 3rd year students of Faculty of Dentistry; 2nd year students of Faculty of Pharmacy study at the Department. Students study nursing in surgery, surgical patients care, general operational surgery, topographical anatomy, traumatology and orthopedics of military-field surgery, trauma and combustiology, methods of treatment of patients, fundamentals of aesthetic plastic surgery. There is experimental subdivision which includes vivarium with a modern laboratory for scientific research. The Department was the first in Ukraine which introduced in its educational process program of Propaedeutic of Surgical Diseases. For optimization of its educational process, the department created 28 educational films, published textbooks and CDs showing the procedures of the surgical patient. Studying is in Ukrainian, Russian and English. Corridors of the Department Staff of General Surgery Department Students work in the computer class Professor Gerasymchuk P. O. is carrying out a practical session Research Study the course of wound healing in the breakdown of homeostasis in extreme factors (shock, sepsis, diabetes). Development of differentiable approaches to evidence-based pathogenic treatment of patients with 'foot syndrome of diabetic.' Optimization of surgical treatment methods of patients with goiter, hyperparathyroidism, benign and malignant adrenal tumors. Development of production technology and use of xeroderma transplantation in patients with burns. Major scientific achievements of the Department Course of studies is investigated and the methods of correction of pathological syndromes after resection of the stomach are elaborated. Methods of preoperative and postoperative management of patients with diffuse toxic syndrome are worked out. Surgical methods of segmental liver resection and access to biliary ways via intrahepatic entry are motivated. Practical methods of diagnosis and treatment of thyrotoxicosis enteral syndrome are developed. Pathogenetic justification algorithm which includes the diagnosis and treatment of 'diabetic's foot syndrome' is created. Technology for manufacturing xeroderma transplants and skin treatment methods of patients’ burns using these transplantations is developed. Methods of minimally invasive metal-osteosynthesis in treatment of fractures were worked out and introduced into clinical practice. Clinical Work Clinical bases of the Department consists of: 2 surgical wards with 30 beds, traumatology department with 65 beds, combustiology department with 30 beds, department of reanimation and intensive therapy with 8 beds, diagnostic ward, office-hospital ambulance. Employees of the clinic provide city and region population with medical care in surgery, traumatology and burn injuries, give consultations for patients of Municipal clinic №1, and organize scientific and practical clinical-morphological conference meetings of surgeons in the region. COMBUSTIOLOGY COURSE Address: Shpytalna Steet, 2, Ternopil, 46001. Department of burn trauma and plastic surgery, Ternopil Municipal Emergency Hospital Tel: (0352) 223277, (0352) 223313, 220704 Staff: 1 professor, 2 assistant professors Head of the Course - Laureate of the State Prize in Science and Technology of Ukraine, MD, Professor Bihuniak Volodymyr Vasyliovytch Teaching Process at the Department The 3rd, 5th and 6th year students of Medical Faculty, doctors and interns study at the Department. The textbook titled 'Burn Wounds' (section on plastic surgery and clinical surgery), methodical recommendation is using lyophilized xeroderma transplantation in combustiology is issued for students and doctors. Methodological meeting At the bedside of a patient Professor Bihuniak V. V. is performing a practical session Research Study of changes in burn disease and improving of medical care with thermal injuries. Optimization of transplanting skin in patients with thermal trauma and in patients with wounds of burn etiology. Studying the effectiveness of using local sources of skin rehabilitation for patients with burn trauma. Compressive use of clothing and silicone plates for prophylaxis and treatment of burn wounds. Major scientific achievements of the Department The method of collection, cryoconservation, lyophilization and storage of pig skin is developed. The technique of lyophilized xeroderma transplants use for deep and surface wounds is developed allows better treatment of patients with thermal injuries. This reduces death rate from heavy burns in Ukraine by 30%. Proposed new processing methods of lyophilized xeroderma transplantation were proposed, using different temperatures during their treatment. An enterprise “Combustiologist” was organized in 1993. It is the only manufacturer of lyophilized xeroderma transplants in Ukraine. Each year, “Combustiologist” produces over one million square centimeters of lyophilized xeroderma transplants which are used by all burn treatment centers in Ukraine. In 2003 xeroderma transplantation of pig skin, which is produced in the laboratory using a cryo vacuum preservation method in Ternopil State Medical Academy named after I.Y. Gorbachevsky, was included in the list of the 100 best products of Ukraine. The Combustiology Department published 116 scientific papers, 9 authors' certificates for inventions and 14 patents. Clinical work Patients with burn injuries are provided with medical-preventive care; conservative and operative treatment. In the Department of Plastic Surgery there are reconstructive operations for patients who suffer from burns, extreme cold and congenital abnormalities.
