Job purpose
To enhance the research profile of the Department of Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology at the University
of Southampton through the conduct of outstanding research, applications for research funding from
diverse sources and the supervision of research staff and students.
To contribute to the continued development and delivery of high quality teaching.
To contribute to the efficient administration of the Department of Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology.

Research
Support the research activities of the Academic Unit of Social Sciences by
developing and sustaining an area of personal research and expertise,
undertaking independent research leading to high quality publications in top
journals and books, and providing guidance to staff and students in your
specialist area.

Education
Support the teaching objectives of the Academic Unit by developing and
delivering a range of teaching and assessment activities including lectures,
seminars, setting/marking coursework, and supervision of MPhil/PhD students
according to your area of subject specialism.

Administration

Contribute to the efficient management and administration of the Department of
Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology, by performing personal administrative duties
as allocated by the Head. Such roles may include personal tutoring as well as other
responsibilities.
Internal and external relationships

Colleagues: (to work closely with academic and administrative staff in the Department of Sociology,
Social Policy & Criminology, and the Academic Unit of Social Sciences in order to ensure the smooth
and efficient delivery of teaching and to promote research. You will be a member of the Faculty
Board, Programme Board, Examination Board and other committees relevant to your duties).

Students: (to ensure the smooth and efficient delivery of teaching and promote effective learning).

Academic staff at other institutions: (to facilitate the development of research links).

External funding bodies: (to enhance the prospects of obtaining research funding).

Engage with stakeholders outside Higher Education to ensure research impact.
Teaching and administrative duties will be allocated by the Head of Division, within the context of the
teaching programmes agreed by the Faculty Education Committee.
Special Requirements
To attend national and international conferences for the purpose of disseminating research results.
To apply for research funding from a range of sources, as appropriate.
To be an active participant in the Institute for Criminal Justice.

PhD in Criminology or a related
Social Science discipline
Track record of excellence in
teaching postgraduate courses in
Criminology at University level.
Expertise in criminology/psychology
and/or criminological/forensic
psychology; policing, criminal
justice, crime and gender, crime and
social policy and
international/comparative research;
or any other area of specialism in
Criminology.
Track record of excellence in
teaching undergraduate courses in
Criminology at University level.
Ability to develop and sustain a highquality research programme,
