At the completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Identify appropriate web-based resources for lab safety,
(The student will site sources via reference page and use the APA style)
2. Know how to safely work within the lab including appropriate attire,
3. Students will research two current lab safety law suits, summarize,
identify areas of liability and areas of weakness in the training of lab
safety.
4. Students will research one current lab safety accident to think critically
about why/how lab accidents happen and how they may be prevented.
We will engage the students from the beginning of the lesson with a video that
shows good and bad lab safety techniques.
A practice quiz to see what the students already know. Students will complete a
second quiz at the end of the lesson. This will show initial knowledge and final
knowledge.
This is a two-day online lesson.

Information Synthesis: Contribute to class blog on lab safety.
Wrap-Up Activity: Final lab safety quiz
1.) Students will research two current lab safety law suits due to violations in
the lab room and write a paragraph about each suit and cite appropriately.
2.) Students will find a good website, evaluate information for veracity and
indicate why they selected that site. (An example of a site:
www.osha.gov/SLTC/laboratories/index.html)
3.) Students will find an incredibly troubling article on the web, dealing with an
awful lab accident then evaluate & identify what should have been done
differently to avoid the lab accident.

2.) The homework assignment. Each part of the assignment is worth 50 points,
and should be evaluated using the included rubric.
This lab safety class lesson develops an awareness of lab safety whenever one
is working in a lab or clinic setting. This lesson will also enhance the students’
ability to use search engines properly, validate content for accuracy and be
comfortable with the technology rich environment of today.
This lesson addresses associate degree graduation competencies. These
standards are founded in the LEAP vision for undergraduate learning and
assessment.



