Dang 1 Yifang Dang Jennifer Bray English 1301.481 March 21, 2011 Rough Draft of Water Pollution The development of the era resulted in a contaminated environment. Although human beings have no intention of doing that, the primary cause of this situation is human beings. The most obvious and grievous contamination is water pollution. It happens not only on the local level but worldwide. People contaminated water many ways and have been unconscious for centuries. To ameliorate the qualification of water, there are governments and interest groups who try to deal with it. There are many elements of contaminating water and the most significant one is Chemical contaminations; such as salt, biofuel, pesticides, firefighting foam, diesel spill, mine wastes. In one hand, water is contaminated by living wastes which might be produced such as salting on the high ways. According to the article "Salting Highways Contaminates Water", says “‘Chloride concentrations are increasing at a rate that threatens the availability of freshwater in the Northeast,’ warns Lawrence E. Band, chair and Voit Gilmore distinguished professor of geography” Dang 2 By farming`, according to the article "Biofuel Corn Contaminates Water", the result that “A study of water sources found that those near fields that practice continuous-com rotations had higher levels of nitrogen, fungicides, and phosphorous than corn-soybean rotations” Chemical contamination also affected water by agriculture in other ways. In the article of Franklin Hoke, it reported the result of a pesticide test of water in the United States. The result showed that most of wells in America were less or more contaminated by pesticides Water is not safe in farms, however; it is not safe in cities either. In every building, there are fire extinguishers, however, the fire fighting foam will contaminate water. According to the article "Probe: Did 3M firefighting foam contaminate drinking water?" it reports that water was tested in 15 Minnesota cities, and water was contaminated by the firefighting foam. It said, “The foam is flushed into storm sewers or left to seep into the ground, raising the possibility that drinking water has been affected” (Meersman 1). On the other hand, water was polluted by factories. Oil spill could pollute water, for example, in the article "Diesel Spill Contaminates China's Yellow River Tributaries", the author stated that two rivers in China “were seriously contaminated after some 150 cubic meters of diesel leaked early Wednesday from a ruptured pipeline”. And fortunately, the situation was under control ("Diesel Spill Contaminates China's Yellow River Tributaries" 1). Water is also contaminated by mine wastes, as strongly complained in “Out of sight, Out of Mine: Ocean Dumping of Mine Wastes”, the mine tailing was a big part of industrial waste, Dang 3 and it hurt the lives of the shallow marine populations so that they had to restrict their consumptions of water. The author declaimed that the problem has been more and more noticed so that people who do not know the issue yet should be aware of the situation (Amanda Reichelt-Brushett Moran, Robert, and Roy Young 1). In local level, there is contaminated water in Texas which is … In worldwide lever, … There are interest groups who care about water pollution and try to appeal people to be aware and protect our living source. For example, one interest group is the European Environment Agency which “is an agency of the European Union. Our task is to provide sound, independent information on the environment. We are a major information source for those involved in developing, adopting, implementing and evaluating environmental policy, and also the general public. Currently, the EEA has 32 member countries” (“Who We Are” 1) (how to write a citation of a website???) From the picture in the EEA website, the overall effect of the design is to tell people the ways how water get contaminated so that they may care about how to reduce the pollution. It is a little bit colorful and busy to show the methods of how water gets contaminated. The color black of the arrows expressed the water is being polluted. But overall, the colors were light and mixed gray which showed people the current situation of the environment.(explain how important the colors are so that they can get a little bit of what your point is) The arrows which showed the orientations of the nitrogen go to Dang 4 which would get people’s attention and the audience would be students of geography, citizens, and publics. Another interest group is The Coastal Conservation Association. According to the website of The Coastal Conservation Association, "The Coastal Conservation Association is a non- profit marine conservation organization. It is comprised of 15 coastal state chapters spanning the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic seaboard"("What is CCA").This group is concerned about my issue because it is a group associate with overfishing which has similarity results with water pollution. According to the website of CCA, "CCA began in 1977 after drastic commercial overfishing along the Texas coast decimated redfish and speckled trout populations"("What is CCA"). Overfishing decreases the population of fish. Similarly, water pollution leads to a decreasing of fish population as well. Their standing is "Save the Redfish" so that they are concerned about the habitat of those fish("What is CCA"). Therefore, if the water was polluted, the group would like to claim the effect of water pollution on fish. Also, this best illustrates the group's position. The members of CCA formulate the forum like a newspaper which is easy for the members to keep track on the latest steps or plans they are cared about. I liked your essay on water pollution and how you kept your personal views out of it. There is one thing I did not see and that is your conclusion. You might want to end this Dang 5 strong and wrap it all up nicely ! Sorry I forgot to say that I also did not see the opposing view water pollution and why is it a waste of time? Or why people do not do anything to stop it. n Dang 6 Works Cited "Biofuel Corn Contaminates Water." USA Today Magazine 138.2775 (2009): 14. Points of View Reference Center. EBSCO. Web. 27 Feb. 2011.
