Statement of Service Welcome to the University of Edinburgh Careers Service. This statement briefly outlines services available to you as a student or eligible graduate of the University. We will provide access to high quality career provision enabling you to make a successful transition into graduate employment or further study. You can expect: A confidential service which offers client-centred guidance, impartial advice and unbiased information. Professional, approachable and informed staff who are committed to helping you and working in partnership to achieve positive outcomes. Comprehensive, accurate and timely information delivered through a range of media and relevant formats. Equality of opportunity and access regardless of age, disability, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, religion or sexual orientation. A response to written or telephone queries within 3 working days. Compliance with all relevant professional codes (e.g. QAA, AGCAS; AGR; NUS; CDI) Reasonable notice if we are forced to cancel an event or appointment booking. Feedback mechanisms and a complaints procedure. What we offer: A) Information Provided online through our website and MyCareerHub resources (requires login) Accessible in person, through drop-in to our Careers Information Centres at Main Library Building and King’s Buildings. MyCareerHub questions portal can be used to submit careers and information queries Regular news updates through MyCareerHub, Facebook page, Twitter feed and blogs. B) Advice and guidance 20 minute appointments bookable 2 days in advance, for help with: getting started, career options, CV and application feedback, developing LinkedIn profiles 45 minute careers guidance appointments (by referral only) for a more in depth discussion to support career planning and career decision making. 45 minute practice selection interviews, bookable 3 days in advance. All the above are available in person, by phone or via Skype. See our website for how to book. C) Programme of events Extensive range of employer led presentations, skills sessions, panel events and forums. Group sessions to support personal development, careers awareness and employability – accessible face to face and online. Tailored provision delivered in your School by professional careers consultants. All the above are promoted through Careers Service communication channels. All bookable events can be accessed via MyCareerHub using your MyEd username and password D) Access to internships, jobs and opportunities A vacancies database (within MyCareerHub) of graduate jobs, internships, placements, vacation work and other opportunities such as insight weeks. Opportunities (within MyCareerHub) for part-time and seasonal employment. Opportunity to meet prospective employers Through our relationships with employers we facilitate opportunities for you to actively engage with employers on campus. We seek to ensure that an appropriate range of employers and opportunity providers are invited to attend on campus recruitment and information events and to advertise their vacancies. What we ask of you: You can help us provide the best possible service to all our users by: Attending - and being punctual for - all events and appointments. We reserve the right to withhold entry if you are more than 10 minutes late for an event booking, and 5 minutes late for an appointment. Treating all booking(s) as a serious commitment to attend. Although we prefer you cancel appointments if unable to attend, please avoid repeat cancellations as we are often unable to (re)release the slot, which disadvantages your fellow students. Notifying us in advance of any appointment and/or event booking if you have additional or specialist needs (email: careers@ed.ac.uk or ring 0131 650 4670) Completing any preparatory work we request, for example, prior to a guidance interview or workshop. Being professional and courteous in all interactions with Careers Service staff and employers. Responding to our request for information on what you are doing following graduation and in your subsequent career. How you can help us improve: The Careers Service is committed to providing an excellent service, so we value your feedback and suggestions. You can provide this in person, by email, phone or via the website. You may also be asked for feedback via more formal channels, including: Feedback forms provided for all major activities and selected group and face to face activities. Our biennial Careers Service Survey Edinburgh Student Experience Survey We would like to be able to respond to and resolve any issue you may have as swiftly and informally as possible. However, if you should have reason to make a formal complaint you can follow the University’s complaints procedure. Access and facilities You are eligible to use The University of Edinburgh Careers Service if you fall within one of the following categories: Current matriculated full-time or part-time student University of Edinburgh graduate who completed their course within the last two years Students and graduates from other universities within the Edinburgh area are not eligible and should use their own university careers service. The service is located on 3rd Floor, Main Library Building and in the Weir Building on the King’s Buildings campus. We are open throughout the year with slightly reduced opening hours out of semester-time. Full details can be found on our website. Close liaison is maintained with the Student Disability Service to provide support for users with disabilities. Both sites are wheelchair accessible and we can amend the size and/or format of information by request. Non-attendance policy We encourage users to behave in a considerate and responsible manner when accessing our services, and respect the rights of fellow students. If you are unable to attend an appointment or event, please cancel your booking online as soon as possible. Two consecutive absences within a 14 day period will incur a two week ban, and your online booking privileges will be revoked. Revised September 2015
