SUGGESTED READING MATERIAL for CANDIDATES for EVDC Equine
Examination 2015
The following list is provided as suggested reading material to help you plan your study
for the ECVD Eq Certifying Examination. The majority of questions will come from
these texts but the list is not all inclusive of every potential reference and publication as
the body of scientific literature is fluid and always changing. The examination reflects the
current state of knowledge in equine veterinary dentistry rather than material from a
particular group of references.
The majority of questions on equine dentistry and oral surgery, and relevant imaging and
anaesthesia articles from journals will be from articles that have been published in the last
ten years. Questions will also come from older papers considered significant and
essential to the advancement of equine dentistry.
Much of general veterinary dental knowledge has been derived from human dentistry
primarily extrapolated and practiced in small animal dentistry. It is expected that you
acquire knowledge of basic general and small animal dental sciences reflected in the
additional reading list.

Whilst an overview of current practice in equine medicine and surgery is needed,
emphasis in general texts should be placed on sections concerning equine dentistry
and oral surgery, and disorders of related structures such as sinuses and
anaesthesia and imaging of these areas.
