SECTION 02930 - LAWNS AND GRASS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1
DESCRIPTION
Provide topsoil, fine grading, fertilizer and turf installation as indicated on the Landscape
and Civil Drawings.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
Deliver fertilizer, as specified, to site in original, sealed containers bearing manufacturer's
guaranteed statement of analysis.

PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A.
Deliver fertilizer to the site in original, unopened containers bearing
manufacturer's guaranteed statement of analysis.
B.
Store fertilizer in weatherproof locations in such a manner that it will be
kept dry until use on the site.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.
Water: Water shall be available on site. Provide necessary hoses and other
watering equipment required to complete work.
B.
Maintenance: Until final acceptance, and until an approved stand of grass
is achieved, maintain plantings by watering, cultivating, mowing, weeding,
spraying, cleaning and replacing as necessary to keep plants in a vigorous, healthy
condition.

Watering: As necessary to keep top 2 inches of soil moist. Coordinate with
Irrigation Contractor.
Mowing: Mow newly planted grass areas at least weekly after initial growth
reaches a 3" maximum height and maintain at a 2" height.
Weeding: Remove weeds and foreign grass over plant areas at least once a week.

CONDITION OF SURFACES
Lawn areas will be left 4 inches below finish grade by other trades. Coordinate
operations with the Construction Manager.

PROTECTION
A.
Take adequate precautions to protect the work and materials against
damage. Erect barricades and warning signs as necessary.
B.

No pre-emergent herbicides shall be used on any areas to receive turf grass.
ACCEPTANCE
The work will be accepted when a completed, undamaged stand of grass is achieved, as
approved by the Owner and the Architect.
1.9
COORDINATION WITH IRRIGATION SYSTEM
An irrigation system shall be installed as part of this scope of work. Contractor shall
coordinate schedules so that irrigation system is operational or nearly so to provide
water to newly planted turf areas. Contractor is responsible for identifying any
potential conflicts with the irrigation system.

SCHEDULES
A.
Sod: Complete between April 15 and September 15 under favorable conditions.
B.

Seed: Complete between May 1 and September 15 for Bermuda.
GUARANTEE
Contractor shall guarantee establishment of an acceptable turf area and provide
replacement from local supply as necessary. Local source shall maintain no more
than ten (10) percent additional materials to take care of replacements.
PART 2 - MATERIALS
2.1
TOPSOIL
A.
Topsoil shall be obtained from stockpile area adjoining site.
B.
Coordinate quantities required with construction manager. Lawn turf areas
have first priority for use of stockpiled topsoil.
C.

Notify Landscape Architect 48 hours prior to preparation of lawn turf areas.
FERTILIZER
A.
General - All fertilizer recommendations based on soil report prepared by
__Alpha-Testing_____________, Dallas, Texas. Reports are available from the
Landscape Architect.
OR
A.
Provide a complete fertilizer, part elements of which are derived from
organic sources and shall include trace elements. Fillers to be sulphur and iron
sulphate.
1.
First Application: 10-10-10 or similar analysis with minimum 8% sulphur and 4%
iron, plus micronutrients.
2.
Second Application: 20-5-10 or similar analysis. Nitrogen source to be a
minimum 50% slow release organic Nitrogen (SCU or UF) plus minimum 8%
sulphur and 4% iron plus micronutrients.
OR
1.
Sulfur Coated Urea: 34-0-0, granular, heavy weight grade pellets, distributed
locally by Harpool Company, Dallas, Texas or approved equal.
2.
Triple Super Phosphate: 0-46-0, heavy weight granular pellets, distributed locally
by Harpool Company, Dallas, Texas or approved equal.
3.
K-MAG: A sulfur, potash and magnesium soil supplement, in pellet form by IMC.

GRASS
A.
1.
Seed
Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylion)
Extra fancy, hulled and treated lawn type seed with purity of 95% or better and
germination of 85% or better, and per requirements of Texas Seed Law. Weed
content less than 1/2%. No noxious weeds.

Sod
Prairie Buffalograss Sod
Prairie Buffalograss grass is a pre-release name assigned to a hybrid Buffalograss that
demonstrates an aggressive establishment and is a good competitor that eliminates
weeds. Prairie Buffalograss is uniform in color, grows to a maximum height of 4"
to 5", requires infrequent water and fertilizer, and has good adaptability to higher
maintenance if desired.

Raleigh St. Augustine (Stenotaphrum secundatum)
Free of foreign weeds and grasses. Cut sod with a full 3/4 inch heavy clay soil covering
roots. Do not cut sod more than 48 hours prior to planting.

St. Augustine Grass (Experimental) Sod
Experimental St. Augustine is the name for a pre-release grass that is an enhanced variety
of Raleigh St. Augustine with greater resistance to SAD and Chinch bugs as well
as a great cold hardiness. It is compatible to Raleigh St. Augustine in color and
texture.

Texoka Buffalograss Sod
Texoka is a Texas A&M development that is a selection of common Buffalograss
demonstrating enhanced vigor, color, and germination. The seed contains both
male and female plants.

Dichondra Plugs
Dichondra is a small, approximately 1-1/2" round leaf, dark green, thick sod producing
plant to be plugged into specified shade areas of St. Augustine Grass

MULCH FIBER
Wood cellulose fiber for hydomulch - Weyerhauser or Conweb with green color additive.

TACKIFIER
Natural, non-asphaltic

SHARP SAND
Clean, washed sand (fine aggregate) - ASTM C-33
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1
FINAL GRADING?SEED BED PREPARATION
A.
Loosen areas to receive grass by rototilling or discing. Fine raked to break
up lumps and produce a smooth, even grade, free from unsightly variations, ridges
or depressions. Remove and dispose of stones one (1") inch or larger, sticks, roots
or other debris exposed during this operation. Fine grading shall be subject to
approval by the Architect. Areas showing weed growth shall be pulled by hand or
sprayed with a pre-approved herbicide, mowed and clippings removed from lawn
areas prior to final grading. Final grades shall not vary more than one-tenth (0.1')
foot from finish elevations.
B.
Preparation of Unchanged Grades
1.
Construction manager will have pre-graded area of turf grasses approximately 4"
below designated grade.
2.
Remove existing vegetation and other extraneous materials, as required. Aerate
subgrade conditions in approved manner.
Landscape Contractor shall till subgrade to a maximum depth to loosen and aerate
soil.

Backfill area with stockpiled topsoil in two 2" (two inch) lifts to a depth of not less
than four (4") inches and till into subgrade to achieve a homogenous mixture of
fine texture.
5.
Roll soil surface to achieve a fine grade, smooth and even, free of lumps and
depressions conforming to all required grades. Till a fertilizer mix of Triple
Phosphate, 0-46-0 into soil at this time at the rate of 3 lbs./1000 sq. ft. This is a
one time application only.
6.
Obtain Landscape Architect's approval before proceeding.
C.
Moisten prepared lawn areas before planting if soil is dry. Water
thoroughly and allow surface to slightly dry before planting of turf.
3.2
FERTILIZER
A.
Applications: Fertilization shall be with Sulphur coated Urea at the rate of
4 lbs./100 sq. ft. and K-Mag at the rate of ? lb./1000 sq. ft. Refer to Section 3.1
B-5 for additional fertilizer application of Triple Super Phosphate mixed into the
topsoil.
B.
Additional applications shall be provided on a 6 week interval throughout
the construction period until final acceptance based in season of the year.

GRASS PLANTING

Last fertilization of season should occur no later than September 30th.
Sod
Contractor shall cut sod on designated site and relocate as indicated on plan.
Plant grass sod by hand to cover indicated area completely. Insure edges of sod
are touching.
Top dress joints with selected site top soil (or sharp sand) to fill voids.
Roll grass areas to achieve a smooth, even surface free from unnatural undulations.
Water sod thoroughly as sod operation progresses.
B.
Dichondra Sprigs
Contractor shall be supplied with 4" sprigs or plugs from Texas A&M and be
required to pocket plant in shady St. Augustine areas at direction of Landscape
Architect. total area of Dichondra Sprigs will not exceed 250 sq. ft. in total.
C.
Hydromulching
1.
At time of seeding, soil to be moist but not muddy and wind velocity shall not
exceed 10 miles per hour. Add water if required to moisten soil.
2.
Complete final grading and hydromulch Bermuda Grass seed evenly at rate of 2
lbs./1000 sq.ft. with wood cellulose fiber at rate of 50 lbs./1000 sq.ft.
3.
Add tackifier to mix for slopes 4:1 or greater at rate of 1 lb./bag of mulch.
3.4
PERFORMANCE
Establish a dense lawn of permanent grasses, free from lumps and depressions. Any part
of the area failing to show uniform cover shall be redone, and such replacement
shall continue until a dense lawn is established. Scattered bare spots will not be
allowed.
3.5
GRADE MAINTENANCE AND EROSION DAMAGE
A.
Maintain original grades of lawn areas after commencement of planting and
during maintenance period.
B.
Provide surface repair to ruts, ridges, tracks. Replant areas as required for
final acceptance.
3.6
INSPECTION AND ACCEPTANCE
A.
Architect shall inspect all work for substantial completion upon written
request by the Contractor.
B.
Upon completion and re-inspection of all repairs or replacements necessary
in the judgement of the Architect, the Architect will certify final acceptance in
writing to the Contractor.
3.7
MAINTENANCE
A.
Maintenance period shall extend from time of completion of planting area
to final acceptance of project.
B.
Maintain lawns by watering, fertilizing, weeding, mowing, trimming and
other operations such as rolling, regrading, and replanting as required to establish a
smooth acceptable lawn free of eroded or bare areas. Mow St. Augustine areas
when grass reaches a height of no more than 3" and maintain a height of 2" during
maintenance period. Buffalograss shall only be mowed at the direction of the
Landscape Architect.
3.8
CLEAN UP
Keep premises neat and orderly including organization of storage areas. Remove trash
and debris resulting from lawn preparation from site daily as work progresses.
Leave paved areas in a broom clean condition by sweeping or hosing.
