museum gugging
Conceived to host and exhibit Art Brut, the museum gugging displays the Gugging Artists’ works at the place of their origin. It is also a forum for international Art Brut and contemporary art. The
French painter Jean Dubuffet coined the term Art Brut to denote a “noble, harsh, original art” of a highly idiosyncratic and autonomous shape language. Art Brut is born free from established trends and without any academic or art theoretical background.
faces from gugging
21 March 2013 – 6 October 2013
Opening: 20 March 2013 at 7 p.m.
The exhibition faces from gugging presents works created in Gugging by various artists around the theme of portraits. Among the experts is Rudolf Horacek, the master of “analytic portraits”; his faces appear dissected and enmeshed with writing, often drowned out all together. Furthermore, there will be works by Oswald Tschirtner, Franz Gableck, Fritz Koller, Johann Hauser, August Walla, Johann
Garber, but also lesser known artists like Johann Binner and Anton Dobay. faces.! Mathias Braschler & Monika Fischer
21 March 2013 – 6 October 2013
Opening: 20 March 2013 at 7 p.m.
For the first time, the museum gugging presents large formatted works on identity, personality and emotion by the Swiss photography duo Mathias Braschler and Monika Fischer. Whether faces of soccer or countries (China, USA) or subjects like climate change or racism: all of their photo series show people in their customary surroundings. In their staged photographs, Mathias Braschler and
Monika Fischer see the individuals and acknowledge their identity, thus making them feel portrayed in the way they really are.
The latest portrait series of the residents living and working in the House of Artists was produced in
January 2013 specifically for this book and the exhibition at the museum gugging. It features the manifold characters of the Gugging Artists, whose works are exhibited in innumerable museums and galleries around the world.

adria.! sartore at the Novomatic Salon
21 March 2013 – 6 October 2013
Opening: 20 March 2013 at 7 p.m.
The Italian artist Adria Sartore paints young girls – in the Old Masters’ style. Her focus lies on facial expressions; she captures them intensified by the girls’ body language. Adria Sartore’s faces mirror the soul and mirror our fantasies. Her pictures leave a lot of room for interpretation and are strikingly expressive, consciously resisting current trends in contemporary art.
Catalogue: adria.! sartore, Johann Feilacher (Herausgeber), Residenzverlag 2013. 60 Seiten. EUR 15,90.

The catalogue will be issued together with the opening of the exhibition.

gugging gallery
Already in 1994 a gallery had been founded to house the work of the Gugging Artists. At the time, it was located in two small rooms inside the House of Artists, i.e. directly at the “origin”. In 1997 the gallery was moved, adapting the exhibition rooms inside today’s Art / Brut Center Gugging, only 165 yards from the House of Artists. Since 2005 thegallery has been located on the renovated ground floor of the Art/ Brut Center Gugging. The galerie gugging exhibits and sells works by international
Art Brut artists next to current paintings, drawings, prints and objects by Gugging Artists. Thus the visitors can receive a comprehensive insight into the world of Art Brut in addition to the exhibitions held at the museum gugging.
The galerie gugging presents renowned artists, and furthermore supports creative newcomers. Our campaign New Artists reaffirms this tradition. Thus we open our latest exhibition series with works by Lejo and Alfred Neumayr – both on show for the first time ever.
New Artists
April, 25 – June, 2 2013
Lejo
Since the early 1990s, Lejo has acquired photographs from deceased estates; in 2007, he first produced collages of other people’s memorabilia, some of them over 100 years old. His poetic works refer to the abandoned pictures’ nameless origin and mirror society, telling us about the respective period’s fashion. They captivate the onlooker through their subtle approach, formal sophistication and understated ironic humour.
Neumayr started frequenting Gugging’s open studio in 2011. He produces large-formatted elaborate drawings. He experiments with various pens and Indian inks; applies, scratches out, thins or mixes until the resulting rhythmic structures bring the pictures to life. His works resemble geographical formations, photographs from outer space, fantasy worlds or mythical creatures. They fascinate due to his consistently detailed approach to large proportions.
