This document provides an overview of current and less current funding options for international student and
researcher mobility. We tried to be as complete as possible, but do not pretend to be truly exhaustive. Tips and hints
are always welcome at research@uhasselt.be and might be included in a future edition.
The subdivision used is based on incoming and an outgoing mobility with Hasselt University as starting point. Next
subheading is the length of stay (shorter or longer than 3 months). At the end is a brief overview of intersectoral
mobility, together with some useful websites.

Grants intended for conferences that are explicitly scientific in nature, with lectures and talks on original contributions

 FWO - Grant for participation workshop abroad
Grants intended to specialize at a foreign institution in the area of their research or in a new technique, in particular by
following a course or workshop. The grants for short foreign visits cover the travel costs and include a fixed allowance
of 66 Euro per day.

2. Short stay (up to 3 months)
 FWO - Travel Grant for a short stay abroad
Intended to offer junior researchers the chance to specialize in their area of research in a foreign laboratory or to learn
new techniques; to offer senior researchers affiliated to a Flemish university or institute for scientific research the
opportunity to undertake knowledge-gathering assignments abroad. The grants for short foreign visits cover the travel
costs and include a fixed allowance of 66 Euro per day.

Junior and senior researchers at a Flemish university or institution for scientific research with at least
one publication.

 EMBO Short-Term Fellowships
EMBO supports life science research. The short-term fellowships funds visits to laboratories in Europe and elsewhere in
the world. The aim is to facilitate valuable collaborations with research groups applying techniques unavailable in their
own laboratories.

Post-doctoral researchers or pre-doctoral scientists who haven’t completed
a PhD degree (they have a lower priority).

 VLIR-UOS - Travel grants for students
VLIR-UOS, Hasselt University and the City of Hasselt offer travel scholarships for students who wish to do their
internship in a developing country or for students who travel to the South for their thesis research.

Grant awarded to researchers that spent the last three years at a Belgian university. Prospective researchers should
have distinguished themselves by the excellence of the grades obtained and work on a research project that may justify
their stay in Rome.

Grants are awarded for a stay in Italy. The grant is a standard fee for the residence and travel costs.

The Foundation Biermans-Lapôtre offers housing to Belgian and Luxembourg students, researchers and professors

The Flemish Community concluded Bilateral Cultural Agreements with 25 countries and on a reciprocal basis these

 EMBO Long-Term Fellowships
EMBO is an organization that supports life science research. This fellowship supports post-doctoral research visits to
laboratories throughout Europe and the world. The Humboldt Foundation pays the host an allowance for research
costs amounting to 800 EUR per month for research fellows from the natural sciences and engineering and 500 EUR for
humanities scholars.

The Erasmus programme is a part of the Life Learning Programme of the European Commission. One of the main
objectives of Erasmus, is to stimulate the student and docent mobility within higher education between the

The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence (Italy) is an international postgraduate and post-doctoral teaching
and research institute established by European Union member states to contribute to cultural and scientific
development in the social sciences, in a European perspective. By statute, the EUI is an intergovernmental
organisation.

The Commission for Educational Exchange offers approximately 35 scholarships annually for study, teaching and

 The Washington Center
Every year, the Flemish Community grants a number of scholarships for The Washington Center to excellent students.
The Washington Center experience is comprised of an internship, an academic course, and a Leadership Forum. All
students are enrolled in a particular program according to their area of interest. Focus group: Bachelor, master and

VLIR-UOS1 provides scholarships to people who wish to carry out research on a development topic at a Flemish
university.

Enables award winners to carry out long-term and ground-breaking research at universities and research institutions in
Germany.

 EMBO Molecular Medicine Sabbaticals
These sabbaticals are established to encourage collaborations between clinicians and research scientists and to
support clinicians who wish to visit basic research laboratories in a different EMBC Member State.

 FWO – Sabbatical leave
The aim of sabbatical leave is to offer full-time members of the autonomous academic staff of universities in the
Flemish Community the opportunity to dedicate 3 months to 1 year entirely to their scientific research. Thanks to the
FWO funding, they can be exempted from their teaching duties. The sum of €2,500 per month is paid to the university,
which can use it to replace the person concerned or to support the beneficiary in his/her research.
Focus group:
Full-time members of the autonomous academic staff of a university in the Flemish Community.

The Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange invites applications for its dissertation and
postdoctoral fellowships support completion of Chinese studies dissertations at European universities.

 FWO - Pegasus Marie Curie Fellowships
To attract excellent postdoctoral researchers to Flanders in order to contribute to the advancement of Flemish science

Candidate must have obtained a PhD or a degree, in any scientific area. (Pegasus-long

 VLIR-UOS - ICP PhD
Every academic year, VLIR-UOS2 grants ten PhD scholarships to excellent Master graduates from a developing country
who have studied in a VLIR-UOS funded Master programme (ICP) in Flanders and wish to make a PhD at a Flemish
university.
Focus group:
The call is open for people who graduated not earlier than 2007, or will graduate in 2012, from a
Flemish, VLIR-UOS funded Master programme (ICP).
Duration:
A full ICP PhD scholarship consists of two consecutive two-year terms and cannot be extended.

Focus group:
Vice awards - applicants must have completed their doctorates between eight and 15 years ago.
Grants are worth up to €1,5 million each over five years. Veni awards - applicant must have obtained a doctorate
within the last three years. Grants are worth up to €250,000 each over a three year period.

Bursaries cover the full payment of registration, tuition and residence fees, plus an allowance, in return for a
commitment to work at Mintek on a year-for-year basis upon graduation.

Undergraduate Bursary Programme is primarily to ensure a steady supply of trained and highly
skilled technical people. Postgraduate Bursary Programme further equips undergraduates through the development
of research methodology skills at the Masters level, followed by the generation of original research that contributes
