A WILLIAM ELLIOTT (believed to be the one from Glenavy) arrived in Port Phillip on 4
January 1851 on board the "Tasman" from London and Ireland, with wife and 5 children.
Was JOSEPH one of WILLIAM'S children? One of Joseph's children was named William
Beresford. A William John Elliott was a baker and flour merchant in Belfast from 1831 1839 but he does not appear in the 1851 census.
William's death cert. stated 2 years in Victoria and 50 in NSW. Died 6 September 1905 (Max
Munro)
Therefore arrived c.1853.
JOSEPH married MARGARET McCAUSLAND at the Scots Presbyterian Church, Sydney, in
1854. MARGARET signed the register, but JOSEPH did not. Their first child, MARY
ELIZABETH, was born in Parramatta the following year and baptised at St John's Presbyterian
Church, Parramatta. They were then living at the Railway Terminus, Church Street,
Parramatta and Joseph was working as a labourer, possibly on the railway then being
constructed. Seven years earlier, Parramatta had been described as 'A borough town of
NSW, situated in the parishes of St John and Field of Mars, in the police district of
Parramatta, and county of Cumberland; it is the seat of the county executive; it is built on
the banks of the Parramatta River, and is, properly speaking, the head of the harbour of Port
Jackson. It is distant from Sydney 18 miles by water and 15 by land. It was originally called
by its first settlers, Rose Hill, which, with good taste, was afterwards changed to the more
euphoneous appellation of Parramatta, the name given by the natives to the river. The
town is situate on either side of a small fresh water river, uniting with the sea inlet above
described. Its main street is above a mile long, and extends from the country residence of
the Governor to the wharf, whence the view down the river is extremely interesting.
Several public buildings are in the town and neighbourhood; there is an excellent
establishment for female orphans on the river's banks, and within half a mile of Parramatta
is the factory, or rather penitentiary, for female prisoners, where those prisoners who have
not been assigned as servants, or who are returned from service and waiting new masters,
or who are remanded for punishment, are confined in three separate classes. The
population amounts to 4,454, viz., 2261 males and 2193 females, and contains 832 houses,
of which 437 are built of stone and brick. The public buildings in Parramatta are rather
numerous. The Government house is a neat building, where the Governor spends a portion
of the year. Here is also a gaol, factory, female orphan school (Protestant), male and female
orphan school (Roman Catholic), King's School, observatory, military barracks, military and
general hospitals. Also St John's Church, Marsfield church, Episcopalian, Roman Catholic
chapel, two Wesleyan chapels, two Scotch churches (free and general assembly), and an
Independent church. Steamers and coaches go from Sydney to Parramatta and return
several times a day.' (A Geographical Dictionary or Gazatteer of the Australian Colonies
1848).
Between 1857 and 1870, JOSEPH and MARGARET lived in Burton Street, Camperdown,
where their other 5 children were born. He worked as a drayman from 1857 to 1865.
Joseph was not listed in Sydney in 1858/59, 1866 - 1870, or 1875, tho he was there in 1863,
1864 & 1865. In 1848 Camperdown was described as 'A village of NSW, situated in the
parish of Petersham, hundred of Sydney, and county of Cumberland, on the road leading
from Sydney to Illawarra. It contains 64 houses, and 241 inhabitants, viz, 125 males and 116
females. It lies at about 1 1/2 miles to the south west of Sydney'.
There was also a ROBERT ELLIOTT living in Burton Street, Camperdown, but we do not know
the connection despite Joseph's eldest son being named, Robert. Death to chase up:
