Center for the Arts and Humanities Student Advisory Committee Purpose of the Center: The sciences tell us how but the arts and humanities tell us why! The center empowers students to ask the big questions that will give their lives meaning. Why are we here? Who am I? What is the meaning of life? The Arts and Humanities are central to understanding these questions, attempting to respond to them, and embracing the different answers that emerge. These disciplines are at the heart of the intellectual, developmental, and experiential life of the college. At Colby, we established the Center for the Arts and Humanities to promote, explore, and celebrate these questions. We believe that the question, "what does it mean to be human?" resonates in the study of Arts and Humanities. Indeed, you could say that it is the point of any academic study, any professional or personal endeavor, and, ultimately, the key to living the “good” life. Uniquely among its college peers, the Center for Arts and Humanities at Colby relies on student partners to help us address these fundamental questions. Through Arts and Humanities Labs, the Annual Humanities Theme, events sponsored by and focused on students, and student research grants, the Center empowers students to find meaning in their lives, to engage with the world in innovative ways, and to chart a new course inspired by transformative experiences. Description of Advisory Committee: Our mission is to craft a community of students, faculty, and local residents, all deeply engaged with the arts and humanities. We celebrate the intrinsic value of studying language, literature, history, philosophy, and the creative arts. We also promote the practical advantages of these disciplines with Arts and Humanities Labs. If you feel passionate about the advantages you gain from engaging with the arts and humanities, want to work with people who share those feelings, and desire to play a role in shaping the experience of the Colby community, maybe the student advisory board is for you! Student Membership Requirements: We have lofty goals for the Center and the Student Advisory Board! In order to achieve them, we need members of SAB to be able to make certain commitments: 1) a serious interest in the Arts and Humanities 2) regular attendance at the monthly SAB meetings 3) regular attendance at Center-sponsored events 4) regular attendance at the monthly meeting (time & date TBD) 5) willingness to help with events (set-up, ticket distribution, etc.) 6) eagerness to promote our events with friends and classmates through word of mouth, social media, etc. Center for the Arts and Humanities Student Advisory Committee Application Name: ____________________________________ Date: __________________ Year: ________________________ Major/Department: ___________________________________ Phone: _____________________ Email:_________________________________ Local Address: - __________________________________________________________ 1.
