National Early Intervention Conference 2nd October 2015 09:30 – 15:15 The Shay Stadium, Halifax, HX1 2YS WELCOME Anne Longfield OBE Children’s Commissioner for England Anne Longfield OBE was appointed Children's Commissioner for England in March this year. As Children’s Commissioner she has legal responsibility for representing the views and interests of the nation’s 12 million children to the decision-makers who can make a difference to their lives. She must also promote and protect their rights. Her work must, in particular, focus on vulnerable groups of children. Anne is a leading figure in the children’s sector with over 30 years’ experience of and expertise in shaping the national policy agenda and delivering services to children and families. She is passionate about championing children’s interests and improving their lives and has led numerous high profile national campaigns, inquiries, commissions and research programmes that have effected positive change for children. Prior to becoming Children’s Commissioner, Anne was Chief Executive of 4Children during which time she spent time advising the Government on children and family policy in the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit at Cabinet Office. Stuart Smith Director of Children and Young People’s Services Calderdale MBC My career began in 1982 in Toxteth Liverpool as an English & PE teacher. My career progressed to Local Authorities through youth work, Community Development and social work with a particular focus on deprived communities. Over this period I have been employed in 7 different Local Authorities throughout England including Kent, Liverpool and currently Calderdale. I have had 5 years’ experience as an Assistant Director and 9 years as Director of Education, Lifelong Learning and both Children’s and Adult Services across three different Local Authorities. Professional qualifications include teaching, youth work and advanced management post graduate in education and public sector management. I have been a Board member of the Children and Families Court Advisory Service for the past four years. Outside of work I am an enthusiastic Liverpool FC supporter and a keen, but not very good, water skier. Nick Frost Professor in Social Work (Childhood, Children and Families) Nick researches and writes widely in relation to childhood, multi-disciplinary work, children in care, family support and safeguarding. He is an active teacher, researcher, author and consultant. Since 2010 Nick has been the Independent Chair of a Safeguarding Children Board: he is currently Chair of the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Board. Nick is a qualified and registered social worker and practiced professionally for 15 years. He has acted as a keynote speaker at regional, national and internationals conferences on child welfare and professional learning. Nick is currently working in the field of family support, and is co-organiser of a series of international conferences which will generate a series of edited books. Nick has been involved in research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the European Union. Nick supervises a number of PhD projects in relation to children, families and multi-disciplinary working. He teaches at Masters and Undergraduate levels. Nick regularly acts as an External Examiner at PhD, Masters and undergraduates levels.
