Biology

Medical Sciences

I am a cell biologist with over 20 years experience studying signal transduction, intracellular trafficking and membrane biology. My laboratory specializes in innovative imaging approaches, including live cell, fluorescence-based assays and electron microscopy (EM) approaches. We also use intravital imaging to study progression and dissemination of solid tumors and leukemia blasts. The foundation of my cell biology training was an ACS fellow at UC San Diego, where I was jointly mentored by Nobel Laureate George Palade and

National Academy member Marilyn Farquhar. My laboratory has been continuously supported by NIH since

1995; foundation funding (ACS, LLS) has also been important to our success. Our publications have been recognized by Immunology Today , Trends in Cell Biology and Faculty of 1000 as research breakthroughs and led to invited talks at Gordon, Keystone and FASEB conferences as well as platform presentations at ASBMB,

ACSB and Biophysical Society national meetings. In the field of Systems Biology, my goal is to build interdisciplinary teams that integrate cell geometry and quantitative data sets through computational approaches. I am also a member of the Multi-Scale Modeling/IMAG consortium and lead the Hematologic

Malignancies Program at UNM’s NCI-designated Cancer Center.
