Oncology is the study of tumors and the study of their
development, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. There are
different types of oncologists that specialize in different types of
cancers, such as:





Gynecological (cancers of the female reproductive organs)
Medical (drug or chemotherapy treatments)
Pediatric (cancers in children)
Radiation (radiation treatments)
Surgical (surgical removal of cancer tumors)
The steps taken to become an oncologist are: five years of training
to the type of oncology you want to pursue a career in. After finishing
eight years of undergraduate and medical school and one to four years
in a residency.
You need a bachelor’s degree which takes four years. You
need medical school which is four years. Residency and fellowship
you need a three year residency and a two year fellowship. And
last a license and certification.
Becoming an oncologist cost about $125-150,000.00. That
goes to schooling and residency. It does not really matter what
you major in for your bachelor’s degree.
If you want to become an oncologist you should have an
academic background of the following subjects: Biology, physics,
chemistry, higher level math, communication (written and oral),
computer literacy, and development of good critical thinking. The
minimal college schooling you can have to get into medical school
is three years, but most of the time you have to have a bachelor’s
degree.
In medical school you will have to take a test called the
MCAT, this is required for every medical student. The test tests
you in the areas of verbal reasoning, physical sciences, writing
sample and biological sciences.
You need to spend three to eight years being an intern. You
need to be an intern to learn procedures, technology and
treatment protocols in detail. Therefore, watching a professional
in the career you want to pursue is very helpful.
Becoming an oncologist takes years of schooling. Fifteen to
sixteen years of schooling overall. But being an oncologist has a
high paying salary. They get paid up to $87.37/hr.
