There are different types of oncologists that specialize in different types of cancers, such as: Gynecological (cancers of the female reproductive organs) Medical (drug or chemotherapy treatments) Pediatric (cancers in children) Radiation (radiation treatments) Surgical (surgical removal of cancer tumors) The steps taken to become an oncologist are: five years of training to the type of oncology you want to pursue a career in. After finishing eight years of undergraduate and medical school and one to four years in a residency. You need a bachelor’s degree which takes four years. You need medical school which is four years. Residency and fellowship you need a three year residency and a two year fellowship. And last a license and certification. Becoming an oncologist cost about $125-150,000.00. That goes to schooling and residency. It does not really matter what you major in for your bachelor’s degree. If you want to become an oncologist you should have an academic background of the following subjects: Biology, physics, chemistry, higher level math, communication (written and oral), computer literacy, and development of good critical thinking. The minimal college schooling you can have to get into medical school is three years, but most of the time you have to have a bachelor’s degree. In medical school you will have to take a test called the MCAT, this is required for every medical student. The test tests you in the areas of verbal reasoning, physical sciences, writing sample and biological sciences. You need to spend three to eight years being an intern. You need to be an intern to learn procedures, technology and treatment protocols in detail. Therefore, watching a professional in the career you want to pursue is very helpful. Becoming an oncologist takes years of schooling. Fifteen to sixteen years of schooling overall. But being an oncologist has a high paying salary. They get paid up to $87.37/hr.
