2015 FORBES MEDAL AWARDED IN RECOGNITION OF THE CONSERVATION OF THE HERITAGE OF FORBES CALL FOR NOMINATIONS For the conservation and/or promotion of the Heritage of Forbes Nominations close 5.00 pm Monday 24 March 2015 For further information call Paul Bennett on (02) 6850 2300 The Forbes Shire Council will award the 2015 Forbes Medal to a person, organisation and/or work for an outstanding contribution to the conservation, enhancement or understanding of the environmental heritage of the Shire. Conservation may involve maintenance, restoration and reconstruction of a significant building, place or object. Enhancement of the Shire’s environmental heritage could include sympathetic alterations or additions to a significant building or place. Contributions to the understanding of heritage could include: Historical writing; Heritage studies and commentary; Interpretive material at heritage sites; and Presentations using various media Work should have been completed within the previous five (5) years is eligible for nomination. A panel of judges chaired by Council’s Heritage Advisor will judge the nominations on Tuesday, 7 April, 2015. The jury’s decision is final. If the nominated project is built or natural conservation work, it is anticipated that a halfhour inspection of the work by the five-member awards jury, which includes Council’s Heritage Advisor, will take place at a mutually convenient time on Tuesday, 7 April. During that inspection, Council’s Heritage Advisor may take photos, with the permission of the nominee, of some of the details of the work to show on the Awards Evening. If the number of nominations exceeds the time indicated, judging will continue on Wednesday, 8 April. The Forbes Medal Presentation will be held on Monday 4 May 2015, between 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm at the Forbes Town Hall. All finalist projects will be displayed as part of an exhibition on the night. Previous winning projects are not eligible to be nominated. . NOTE: The Burra Charter (The Australia ICOMOS Charter for Places of Cultural Significance) 1.4 Conservation means all the processes of looking after a place so as to retain its cultural significance 1.5 Maintenance means the continuous Protective care of the fabric and setting of a place, and is to be distinguished from repair. Repair involves restoration or reconstruction. 1.6 1.7 1.8 Preservation means maintaining the fabric of a place in its existing state and retarding deterioration. Restoration means returning the existing Fabric of a place to a known earlier state by removing accretions or by reassembling existing components without the introduction of new material. Reconstruction means returning a place to a known earlier state and is distinguished from restoration by the introduction of new material into the fabric. The distinctions referred to, for example in relation to roof gutters, are: Maintenance – regular inspection and cleaning of gutters; Repair involving restoration – returning of dislodged gutters; Repair involving reconstruction – replacing decayed gutters. It is recognised that all places and their components change over time at varying rates. New material may include recycled material salvaged from other places. This should not be to the detriment of any place of cultural significance.
