The One Body of Christ
In this article, I hope to identify the one
body of Christ, who the members are and
what their function is, their gifts and how to
obtain and keep unity. I have included
scripture and a short history of unity and
division of the Church. Jesus prayed that all
believers be one. “I do not ask on behalf of
these alone, but for those also who believe
in Me through their word; that they may all
be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I
in You, that they also may be in Us, so that
the world may believe that You sent Me.
John 17:20-21 The glory which You have
given Me, I have given to them, that they
may be one, just as We are one, I in them
and You in Me, that they may be perfected
in unity, so the world may know that You
sent Me, and loved them, even as You have
loved Me. John 17:23

We are members of one body, whose head
is Christ. Do you not know that your bodies
are members of Christ …? But the one who
joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with

Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord,
implore you to walk in a manner worthy of
the calling with which you have been called,
with all humility and gentleness, with
patience, showing tolerance for one
another in love, being diligent to preserve
the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
There is one body and One Spirit just as also
you were called in one hope of your calling;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God

The Great Commission
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and the
Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe
all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you
always, even to the end of the age."

and Father of all who is over all and through
all and in all. Ephesians 4:1-6
one body in Christ and individually
members of one another. Romans 12:4-5
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the
mercies of God, to present your bodies a
living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God,
which is your spiritual service of worship.
Romans 12:1
Since we have gifts that differ according to
the grace given us, each of us is to exercise
them accordingly; if prophecy, according to
the proportion of his faith; if service, in his
serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;
or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he
who gives, with liberality; he who leads,
with diligence; he who shows mercy, with
cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8
And He gave some as apostles, and some as
prophets, and some as evangelists, and
some as pastors and teachers, for the
equipping of the saints for the work of
service, to the building up of the body of
Christ; until we all attain the unity of the
faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of
God, to a mature man, to the measure of
the stature which belongs to the to the
fulness of Christ. As a result, we are no
longer to be children, tossed here and there
by waves and carried about by every wind
of doctrine, buy the trickery of men, by
craftiness in deceitful scheming; but
speaking the truth in love, we are to grow
up in all aspects into Him who is the head,
even Christ, from whom the whole body,
being fitted and held together by what
every joint supplies according to the proper
working of each individual part, causes the
growth of the body for the building up of
itself in love. Ephesians 4:11-16
But now God has placed the members, each
one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
If they were all one member, where would
the body be? But now there are many
members, but one body. 1 Corinthians
12:18-20
And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have
no need of you”; or again the head to the
feet, “I have no need of you.” On the
contrary, it is much truer that the members
of the body which seem to be weaker are
necessary; and those members of the body
which we deem less honorable, on these we
bestow more abundant honor, and our less
presentable members become much more
presentable, whereas our more presentable
members have no need of it. But God has
so composed the body, giving more
abundant honor to that member which
lacked, so that there may be no division in
the body, but that the members may have
the same care for one another. And if one
member suffers, all the members suffer
with it; if one member is honored, all the
members rejoice with it. Now you are
Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK
TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS
NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one
another. Ephesians 4:25
For just as we have many members in one
body and all members do not have the
same function, so we, who are many, are

Christ’s body, and individually members of
it. And God has appointed in the church,
first apostles, second prophets, third
teachers, then miracles, then gifts of
healings, helps, administrations, various
kinds of tongues. 1 Corinthians 12:21-31
slave nor free man, there is neither male
nor female; for you are all one in Christ
Jesus. Galatians 3:27-28
Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and
that there be no divisions among you, but
that you be made complete in the same
mind and the same judgment. Now I mean
this, that each one of you is saying, “I am of
Paul,” and “I of Apollos,” and “I of Cephas,”
and “I of Christ.” Has Christ been divided?
Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or
were you baptized in the name of Paul? 1
Corinthians 1:10, 12-13
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the
same Spirit. And there are varieties of
ministries, and the same Lord. There are
varieties of effects, but the same God who
works all things in all persons. But to each
one is given the manifestation of the Spirit
for the common good. For to one is given
the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and
to another the word of knowledge
according to the same Spirit; to another
faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts
of healing by the one Spirit, and to another
the effecting of miracles, distinguishing of
spirits, to another various kinds of tongues,
and to another the interpretation of
tongues. But the one and same Spirit works
all these things, distributing to each one
individually just as He wills. For even as the
body is one and yet has many members,
and all the members of the body, though
they are many, are one body, so also is
Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:4-12
When one uses their denomination as their
main identity, they are boasting and
immediately bring down the wall of
division. Let’s look into the dictionary* for
the
meaning
of
the
word
denominationalism, it means sectarianism.
A sectarian is a bigoted or narrow-minded
person. A bigot is a person who is
extremely intolerant of another’s creed,
belief or opinion. We ought to identify
ourselves as the scripture identifies us, as
Christians, to avoid divisions.
We
individually should do our part to bring
unity, knowing that there is one body, by
having the same care for all Christians
regardless of denomination.
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into
one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether
slaves or free, and we were all made to
drink of one spirit. For the body is not one
member, but many. 1 Corinthians 12:13-14
But by His doing you are in
Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom
from God, and righteousness and
sanctification, and redemption, so that, just
as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS,
BOAST IN THE LORD.” 1 Corinthians 1:30-31
For all of you who were baptized into Christ
have clothed yourselves with Christ. There
is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither

St. Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch, who was
martyred in 107 AD, was the first known
person to use the term “Catholic Church” in
Christian writings.
It was not the
Biblical or original name of the Church.
According to scripture, the church was
called the Church, the “Way” (Acts 9:2) and
those of the church “Christians” (Acts
11:26). The Church of God was another
scriptural name, among others. Remember
that the church is the one body in Christ.
Let us not make boasts of denominational
division, but boast in the Lord.
LORD commanded the blessing – life
forever. Psalm 133:1-3
This unity is a spiritual unity, not a fleshly
unity, for example, holding hands in prayer
circles, which, I believe, is actually a form of
laying on of hands which should not be
done hastily, (1 Timothy 5:22) lest one
share the responsibility of the sins of
others. Sharing the responsibility of others
sins brings disunity.
Are you so foolish? Having begun by the
spirit, are you now being perfected by the
flesh? Galatians 3:3
But in case I am delayed, I write so that you
will know how one ought to conduct
himself in the household of God, which is
the church of the living God, the pillar and
support of the truth. 1 Timothy 3:15
I am including a short history of major
importance of the one body of Christ. I
decided to get the Catholic view of the
Protestant division and recently visited with
Deacon Bob from St. Joseph’s Cathedral, in
Manchester, NH, USA. He informed me of
the
Decree
on
Ecumenism and I was given a book on the
documents of Vatican II, in which the
decree is found. Among Catholics, there is
indeed a movement to bring the church
into unity. Promoting the restoration of
unity among all Christians was one of the
Chief concerns of the Second Sacred
Ecumenical Synod of the Vatican. The
church established by Christ is truly one and
unique. Yet many Christian communions
present themselves to men as the true
heritage of Jesus Christ. To be sure, all
claim themselves disciples of the Lord, but
their convictions clash and their paths
diverge,
as
though
Christ Himself were divided. Without a
So then you are no longer strangers and
aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the
saints, and are of God’s household, having
been built on the foundation of the apostles
and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the
corner stone, in whom the whole building,
being fitted together, is growing into a holy
temple in the Lord, in whom you also are
being built together into a dwelling of God
in the Spirit. Ephesians 2:19-22
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for
brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like
the precious oil upon the head, coming
down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard,
coming down upon the edge of his robes. It
is like the dew of Hermon coming down
upon the mountains of Zion; for there the

will of Christ, provides a stumbling block to
the world, and inflicts damage on the most

every creature.**
saints rather than all saints. Luther wrote
to the Pope in May, 1518 stating that it was
the scandal of the abuse of indulgences
(partial remission of the temporal
punishment that is still due for sin, after
absolution) that drove him to protest. He
also desired that the Pope should
understand his position and carefully
consider the matters at issue. Careful
consideration was not something Leo X was
prepared to give. The attempt to control
Luther began. The pope instructed the
general of the Augustinian Order to quench
the fires of rebellion. On August 15, 1518
Luther met with Cardinal Cajetan in
Augsburg for a defense of his actions. The
cardinal was zealous for papal rights and
would not even let Luther talk. In their
third meeting Luther was called to recant,
but refused. An ambassador to Elector
Frederick, wanted Luther to have a fair
defense, but failed in his attempt to
conciliate the parties. He did receive from
Luther a promise to write a letter of
apology for the whole matter. Luther also
agreed to support indulgences in their
proper usage and urge reverence for the
Holy See. The mission was disowned by
superiors and came to naught. The debate
moved to Leipzig where Luther was driven
with remorseless logic to “the damning
admission that popes and councils could
err.” The debates ended and Eck who
debated Luther went back to Rome,
triumphant that he had unmasked another
heretic. Luther left Leipzig branded a
“heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.”
Martin Luther (1483-1546)
Martin Luther (1483-1546 AD), the great
Protestant reformer, visited Rome in 1510.
This is what he found: The Renaissance
Papacy since 1447, with the accession of
Nicholas V, had steadily centered its policy
on the secularization of the church.
Without leadership of the popes, the moral
life of Rome had degenerated steadily.
According to Luther, Rome had generally, in
practice, become a place of anti-Christian
life.
After visiting and observing the utter
corruption of Rome, Martin Luther, Catholic
monk, Dr. of Theology, preacher, Professor
of Theology, Vicar, on October 31, 1517
posted his 95 Theses on the Wittenberg
Cathedral door. Notably among them were
the opposition to the sale of indulgences by
the church and the priesthood of certain
The Bible supports Papal confrontation:
5
But when Cephas came to Antioch, I
opposed him to his face, because he stood
condemned. For prior to the coming of
certain men from James, he used to eat
with the Gentiles; but when they came, he
began to withdraw and hold himself aloof,
fearing the party of the circumcision. The
rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy.
But when I saw that they were not
straightforward about the truth of the
gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of
all, “If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles
and not like the Jews, how is it that you
compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?
Galatians 2:11-14
to recant within 60 days or be
excommunicated. It affirmed the heretical
quality of Luther’s position in opposing the
sale of indulgences. It caused further
disaffection rather than the healing of the
Church.
Martin Luther refused to recant and Pope
Leo X signed the final bull demanding
complete excommunication. Martin Luther
was excommunicated, but Erasmus drew up
twenty-two axioms, proving that the pope
should appoint an impartial tribunal for the
consideration of Luther’s propositions.
When the Roman party acted at Worms,
they acted on the principle that Luther was
already condemned. He should not be
heard, he should be executed as a heretic.
On April 17-18, 1521 he was presented
before the Diet (A German formal assembly
of princes). Pope Leo X was not present
and Martin spoke in Latin and German,
which Charles V (1500-1558), Holy Roman
Emperor, did not know. He refused to
recant, because he followed his conscience
and the Bible, our authority.
As tumult
increased, Charles V rose abruptly and
walked out of the room signaling the end of
the audience. A marshal quickly took
Luther out of the hall. Martin was let go,
but was recalled several times over the next
several days. His counselors and the
counselors of the emperor tried to reach a
compromise. If any compromise involved
the surrender of his position, then it was
impossible. In despair, the intermediaries
gave up. Luther quietly slipped out of
Worms on April 26th. Luther visited his
relatives in Mohra and resumed his journey
The Apostle Paul did not take hypocrisy
lightly, but opposed Peter who stood
condemned. Paul confronted Peter to his
face in the presence of all. The Catholics
were not correct in teaching infallibility of
the Popes, since even Peter was carried
away by hypocrisy. I believe that Catholics
claim Peter was the 1st Pope, and that all
other popes were and are his successors.
So there is Biblical proof of the fallibility of
popes and the need for them to be
confronted when in error.
Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the
presence of all, so that the rest also will be
fearful of sinning. I solemnly charge you in
the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and
of His chosen angels, to maintain these
principles without bias, doing nothing in a
spirit of partiality. 1 Timothy 5:20-21
On June 15, 1520 Pope Leo X signed the
bull, Exurge Domine. It called upon Martin
6
May 4th. He was surprised by a company of
armed horsemen who stopped the carriage
he was riding in. They whispered to Luther
and he left the carriage and mounted a
horse and traveled through the day and into
the night to the castle of Wartburg, in
Eisenach, Germany. He was kept in hiding
to prevent any attempt of assassination, of
which Romanists wished. He was treated as
a guest while there, with respect and honor.
He dressed as a knight and was spoken to
as, “Sir George.” There he translated the
New Testament into a readable German
edition and wrote tract after tract. Luther
was profoundly used by the Lord. The great
reformer, would pull back the drapes of the
oppressive Middle Ages and let in the Light.
The Catholic Church has since looked at his
Theses and changed many of their
teachings in their Church because of them.
The Catholic Church now seems to have a
healthy respect for Martin.
Perhaps
Luther’s actions were based upon the
following scripture:
MY PEOPLE. Therefore, “COME OUT FROM
THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE,” SAYS THE
Lord. “AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS
UNCLEAN; and I will welcome you. “And I
will be a father to you, and you shall be
sons and daughters to Me,” says the Lord
Almighty. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Could Luther have acted differently?
Perhaps he could have had others with him
in bringing an accusation against an elder.
He should not have acted alone, even
though he had much backing.
Do not receive an accusation against an
elder except on the basis of two or three
witnesses. 1 Timothy 5:19
Wisdom makes knowledge acceptable.
Pope Leo X (1475-1521), the son of Lorenzo
d’Medici (the Magnificient, Italian prince),
was made a cardinal at the age of 14 and
was elected to the papacy in February 1513,
at around the age of 38. He was ordained a
priest the next month, made a bishop two
days later, and installed in the papal office
two days after that. His patronizing of the
arts and continued rebuilding of St. Peter’s,
caused him to be an extravagant spender,
which led to the sale of indulgences,
criticized by many.
If possible, so far as it depends on you, be
at peace with all men. Romans 12:18
Do not be bound together with unbelievers;
for what partnership have righteousness
and lawlessness, or what fellowship has
light with darkness? Or what harmony has
Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in
common with an unbeliever? Or what
agreement has the temple of God with
idols? For we are the temple of the living
God; just as God said, “I WILL DWELL IN
THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I
WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE
The Bible states:
For in the first place, when you come
together as a church, I hear that divisions
exist among you, and in part I believe it.
For there must also be factions among you
so that those who are approved may
7
become evident among you. 1 Corinthians
11:18-19
The Catholic Church is the largest church in
the world. The Catholics had prayed for
Church unity each year in January 18-25 for
decades until 1959. The general idea
behind those days of prayer was the hope
that Protestants would return to the one
true church and that the orthodox schism
would end. Throughout those years the
Protestant became more involved in the
“ecumenical movement”. The development
of the World Council of Churches, the
growth of national and world-wide
groupings of Protestant churches, the
merger of Churches – all these expressed a
groping toward unity. The Roman Catholic
Church remained aloof.
There were
Catholic centers of study in Europe that
watched developments, but in general, the
church watched and prayed without joining
in the dialogue and prayer of the Protestant
Churches. Then came Pope John XXIII who
called for, on January 25, 1959, an
Ecumenical Council. There was a decree for
Ecumenism voted upon on November 20,
1964 and a ceremonial vote the next day on
November 21, 1964. The Decree passed by
a large margin. In this decree, the focus is
more on a “pilgrim” Church moving toward
Christ rather than a movement of “return”
to the Roman Catholic Church.
Pope John XXIII (Papacy - 1958-1963)
But in subsequent centuries more
widespread disagreements appeared and
quite large communities became separated
from full communion with the Catholic
church - developments for which, at times,
men of both sides were to blame.
However, one cannot impute the sin of
separation to those who at present are
born into these Communities and are
instilled therein with respect and affection
as brothers. For men who believe in Christ
and have been properly baptized are
brought into a certain, though imperfect,
communion with the Catholic Church.
Undoubtedly, the differences that exist in
varying degrees between them and the
Catholic Church – whether in doctrine and
sometimes in discipline, or concerning the
structure of the Church – do indeed create
many and sometimes serious obstacles to
full ecclesiastical communion. These the
ecumenical movement is striving to
overcome.
All disagreements can and should be
worked out and ought to be prayed
through, worked out with openness, to
obey the commandment to agree with one
another. Let us find out common ground
and work through our differences and the
8
divisions to the point of agreement with
one another to become united as all
properly baptized believers, having received
the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 3:5) are
members of one body of Christ and
members of one another. It is time for
unity and the reconciliation of the true
church, not the apostate church. Let us
choose to be peacemakers.
called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men
among the brethren, and they sent this
letter by them, Acts 15:22-23
“The apostles and the brethren who are
elders, to the brethren in Antioch and Syria
and Cilicia who are from the Gentiles,
greetings. Since we have heard that some
of our number to whom we gave no
instruction have disturbed you with their
words, unsettling their souls, it seemed
good to us, having become of one mind, to
select men to send to you with our beloved
Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked
their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ. Therefore we have sent Judas and
Silas, who themselves will also report the
same things by word of mouth. For it
seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to
lay upon you no greater burden than these
essentials: that you abstain from things
sacrificed to idols and from blood and from
things strangled and from fornication; if you
keep yourselves free from such things, you
will do well. Farewell.” Acts 15:23-29
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they
shall be called the sons of God. Matthew
5:9
The following is an example from Scripture:
But some of the sect of the Pharisees who
had believed stood up, saying, “It is
necessary to circumcise them and to direct
them to observe the Law of Moses.” The
apostles and the elders came together to
look into this matter. After there had been
much debate, Peter stood up and said to
them, “Brethren, you know that in the early
days God made a choice among you, that by
my mouth the Gentiles would hear the
word of the gospel and believe. Acts 15:5-7
So when they were sent away, they went
down to Antioch; and having gathered the
congregation together, they delivered the
letter. When they had read it, they rejoiced
because of its encouragement. Judas and
Silas, also being prophets themselves,
encouraged and strengthened the brethren
with a lengthy message. After they had
spent time there, they were sent away from
the brethren in peace to those who had
sent them out. Acts 15:30-31, 33
“Therefore it is my judgment that we do
not trouble those who are turning to God
from among the Gentiles, but that we write
to them that they abstain from things
contaminated by idols and from fornication
and from what is strangled and from blood.
Acts 15:19-20
Then it seemed good to the apostles and
the elders, with the whole church, to
choose men from among them to send to
Antioch with Paul and Barnabas - Judas
9
This is an example of peacemaking in the
matters of the teaching of the church.
Please note the early church did not allow
dissension to divide them. They took
rational steps to deal with the division.
First, they did not ignore the division, but
addressed the false teaching, then the
elders and apostles looked into the matter.
Then there was much debate. After the
debate Peter, who qualified himself as the
preacher to the Gentiles, and that that was
God’s choice, stated his opinion on the
matter. He thus spoke with authority. It
seemed good to the elders and the
apostles, with the whole church, to send
two leading men with Paul and Barnabas to
Antioch with a letter stating their
determined position on the matter. In the
letter they stated that they became of one
mind and that it seemed good to the Holy
Spirit and to them to lay upon the Gentiles,
no greater burden than these essentials.
Obviously, they sought out God’s direction
through the Holy Spirit. I believe that
direction comes as a result of prayer.
Please note that this was not done in closed
chambers, the whole church agreed to send
the letter and the letter was read to the
congregation in Antioch.
But, let us firmly stand upon the Word of
God and not submit to false teachings, such
as praying to the saints (1 Samuel 28:15),
veneration and worship of Mary, “Holy
Queen” (Jeremiah 44:24-29), recitation of
the rosary (Luke 11:2-4), infant baptism by
sprinkling (Acts 8:36-39), not baptizing in
the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38), calling
church leaders “Father” (Matthew 23:9).
“Whoever then annuls one of the least of
these commandments, and teaches others
to do the same, shall be called least in the
kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and
teaches them, he shall be called great in the
kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:19
You therefore, beloved, knowing this
beforehand, be on your guard so that you
are not carried away by the error of
unprincipled men and fall from your own
steadfastness, but grow in the grace and
knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and
to the day of eternity. Amen.
Beloved, while I was making every effort to
write you about our common salvation, I
felt the necessity to write to you appealing
that you contend earnestly for the faith
which was once for all delivered to the
saints. Jude 1:3
Having been sent to Antioch they gathered
the congregation together to deliver the
letter. When they read it, they rejoiced
because of its encouragement.
After
spending time there, they were sent away
from the brethren in peace. The church
was rejoicing, in peace and left intact by the
wise guidance of the leaders of the Church
with the approval of the whole church.

Here is an edited email sent to me by Pastor

having to take four meetings in a day at four
different places and we also conducted baptism
ceremony for those who accepted Lord Jesus
Christ as their personal savoir and Lord and
repented from their sin during our outreach
meetings in their areas. By the Grace of Lord,
about 40 people were baptized this day, I know
Satan has been defeated in their lives as they
have full filled His Righteousness, I also have
attached some picture of baptism, too.
I also need your special prayers about my trip to
Malaysia and Thailand, I will land in Malaysia
and after attending conference and preaching in
And Peter said to them, “Repent and each of
you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ
and you will receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38
12
For all of you who were baptized into
Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
Galatians 3:27
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into
one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether
slaves or free, and we were all made to
drink of one Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13

Therefore we have been buried with Him
through baptism into death,

So that as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father, so we too
might walk in the newness of life.
Romans 6:4
When I was a child, I used to look out of our
back window to see the back of the
Lutheran Wartburg Seminary castle, which
13
was across the street. It was an impressive
building with a statue of Martin Luther in
front of the building. We used to walk by
the statue and look at it. I was blessed to
be brought up with that strong Christian
influence.
Some of my ancestors, Jeremiah Trexler and
his parents (John Peter Trexler and
Catherine Breinig Trexler), came over to
America (New York, NY) from Germany in
1710. Jeremiah grew up and married Anna
Maria Catherina Schumacher.
Maria
Elizabeth married their son John Trexler in
1762 and they had a firstborn son, whom
they
named
Emanuel
(1757-1796).
Emanuel means “God with us”. The story of
Jesus can be observed from their names:
Anna was the mother of Mary or Maria.
Mary gave birth to Jesus. Mary’s cousin
was Elizabeth, who gave birth to John the
Baptist, who preceded Jesus, and baptized
Him. John Trexler preceded Emanuel, his
firstborn son. Emanuel was a carpenter and
fought in the Revolutionary war. He moved
up to Ohio.
My mother’s paternal
grandmother was Minnie Olive (Trexler)
Clark, who gave to me a silver cup. I believe
that God arranged this and my ancestors
left us with their lives as a sign from God,
that God is with us.
