Essay 1: Analytic: In this essay you must satisfactorily summarize Albert Nock’s definition of what it means to be an educated person and then analyze yourself in terms of his perspective—without agreeing or disagreeing or otherwise evaluating his definition (that can come in another assignment). Nock has several explicitly stated traits which he believes mark the educated individual. A couple of them are: “likes to think” and “has a sense of history.” There are others. In your own words (as well as some of his)— but without doing any damage to his ideas—briefly present to the reader those ideas in Part 1 of your essay.. Then, in Part 2 (which I believe will be noticeably longer than Part 1), take the characteristics you have summarized and look at yourself in terms of each. For example, if Nock happened to say “Educated people are lefthanded,” I would presume you would say something like, “Being righthanded, Nock would not consider me educated,” or, “I’m ambidextrous, so Nock would have mixed feelings about me.” When referring to yourself, you should make sure to use lots of specific examples from your life experience to show how you fit (or don’t fit) Nock’s views of the E-person. What I am looking for in this assignment is the presence of a couple of important critical thinking skills: That you can understand someone else’s perspective about something and describe it accurately; That you can apply that perspective analytically to some object or event (in this case, YOURSELF and your experiences). My assignments do not have length limits, but I think it would be hard to do a thorough job on this assignment in fewer than 1,000 words—and 750 is by no means a maximum! Have fun!
