Tri the Oatka Scholarship
WHO WE ARE: About 7 years ago, when our kids entered school, a group of close friends got into a
fitness regime. We participated in 5K run events in local areas. We always made a day of the event
because we enjoyed the sense of achievement we felt when we crossed the finish line. We generally ran
for a charity such as Breast Cancer, Leukemia, Hemophilia, Melanoma or a Memorial run. This made
race day a win –win for all of us. 5k runs quickly turned into 10K runs. Shortly after, we were purchasing
road bikes and then swimsuits, goggles and wetsuits.
We were transformed into Triathletes.
Our TRI group social events became Swim, Bike Run events, generally with our kids cheering us along
through wind, rain and snow with their posters, cow bells and cameras in hand. No matter what event it
was or what position we placed, we were together; happy, healthy and a sponsor to someone that
benefited because of our participation.
In 2011, we decided that Le Roy was a great place to host such an event. We decided to take advantage of
the beautiful Oatka Creek with a Canoe / Kayak event to replace the swim. And so….the “Tritheoatka”
was born; 5K run, 13 mile bike, 1.6 mile Canoe or Kayak. Thirty-eight teams competed that first year,
doubling in year two, and we continue to grow as we head into our fourth year!
Proceeds from our event are given back to our own community. The Le Roy Community Pool, LCCP,
The Le Roy Food Pantry, Grace’s Kitchen, Le Roy Nursery School, and Wolcott Street School have all
benefited from this event. We will continue to donate locally and in 2016, award our 3rd Le Roy High
School Senior a $1000 scholarship. This student must meet the criteria included in the enclosed
application.
