Four Week Bridges Program “How do scientists do science? Adiva, Bella, Miranda, Tiffany, RayRay Andrew, Brayton, Ryan, Cairo, Josh, Cairo Weekly Topics and essential questions: Understanding the scientific method. Objectives: Use the scientific method to solve problems Identifying features in a Roly-poly’s. Recognize and discuss adaptations Construct an argument that animals and plants have internal and external structures that support their survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. Animal organs include eyes, lung, gills, ears, nose, heart, skin, stomach… Plant structures include leaves, roots, stems, branches, bark, and flowers. Math standards also to be included. Day 1- Observations Method of Instruction: Inquiry Engage: Make 10 observations in small groups. Use those observations to formulate questions. Explore/Explain/Elaborate: Carousel Visit to several different ecosystems. Share many observations. High Schoolers will be scribes. Use observations to develop several inquiries. Evaluation: continual check-in’s by asking if they understand and if they need help with anything. Day 2- Problem Solving Method of Instruction: Inquiry Engage: find out why the toys, flashlight, tools…. aren’t working through hands on investigation. Building contraptions to find out what Roly-poly’s do and how they survive. Explore/Explain/Elaborate: write/draw lists what they notice or think. Form a hypothesis. Come as a whole and elaborate what they found out and come up with a main answer all together. Evaluation: continual check in’s by asking if they understand and if they need help with anything. Day 3- Problem Solving Method of Instruction: Guided Inquiry Weekly Topics and essential questions: Understanding the scientific method. Objectives: Use the scientific method to learn about Roly-poly’s. Identifying features in a roly poly through the scientific method Four Week Bridges Program “How do scientists do science? Adiva, Bella, Miranda, Tiffany, RayRay Andrew, Brayton, Ryan, Cairo, Josh, Cairo Engage: Use apparatus provided to learn about Roly-poly’s. What can we learn when we provide a controlled investigation Explore/Explain/Elaborate: Set up investigation with Pill bugs (one side moist & the other dry) make observations and gather data for 20 minutes. Evaluation: What conclusions can you make before you analyze your data? Gather the data and make tables and graphs to share information. Analyze the data Day 4- Perfecting the Scientific Method Method of Instruction: Inquiry Weekly Topics and essential questions: Applying the scientific method- Student designed experimentation. Objectives: Use the scientific method to investigate sustainable pest inhibitors. Short Instruction on hazards of common pesticides Engage: Use apparatus provided to develop a sustainable pest inhibitor. What can we learn about “Pest Inhibitors” when we provide a controlled investigation? Explore/Explain/Elaborate: Set up investigation with Pill bugs (one side (moist) garlic & the other (moist) no garlic make observations and gather data for 20 minutes. Evaluation: What conclusions can you make before you analyze your data? Gather the data and make tables and graphs to share information. Write a Scientific Report!
