CEP Pre-conference Program Description The Council on Ethnic Participation (CEP) is one of four councils housed within the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). Founded in 1988 by former ASHE president Ellen Earle Chaffee, the stated goal of the CEP is to maintain and guide the development of structural diversity within ASHE. In 2010, CEP chair Terrell Strayhorn proposed an inaugural CEP pre-conference, to be held immediately prior to the ASHE annual meeting in 2011. Approved as a one-year pilot, the CEP pre-conference aims to enhance the awareness of marginalized populations within higher education, by providing a forum for research in the fields of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. In addition to these scholarly objectives, the CEP pre-conference will address the professional development of junior faculty and graduate students, via the inclusion of targeted academic workshops. Facilitated by seasoned scholars, these workshops are intended to provide enhanced mentorship opportunities for historically marginalized members of the higher education community. It is the hope of the CEP membership that this pre-conference will be offered annually, and will promote increased scholarly collaboration and an enhanced sense of community— features which will contribute to enhanced structural diversity within the ASHE organization. 1 CEP Pre-conference Program Theory 2 CEP Pre-conference Logic Model Resources Activities Outputs In order to accomplish our set of activities we will need the following: In order to address our problem or asset we will accomplish the following activities: We expect that once accomplished these activities will produce the following evidence or service delivery: Number of qualified preconference proposals submitted Number of preconference presenters in attendance Number of preconference participants in attendance Number of positive preconference evaluations submitted Endorsement by ASHE Board of Directors, ASHE Executive Office staff, and Council on Ethnic Participation members CEP preconference plan and budget Preconference proposals (scholarly and professional development) Preconference venues (Gantt Center and Westin Hotel) Keynote speaker CEP preconference registrants Preconference support staff (technical, registration, set-up, etc.) Preconference materials (promotional items, handouts, name tags, meal tickets, etc.) Design and determine CEP preconference format and agenda Establish submission criteria and call for proposals Evaluate and approve preconference proposals Design and propose preconference budget strategy Secure human, physical, and technological resources for preconference Conduct scholarly research paper sessions Conduct professional development workshops Conduct preconference evaluation Short- & Long-Term Outcomes We expect that if accomplished these activities will lead to the following changes in 1-3 then 46years: We expect that if accomplished these activities will lead to the following changes in 7-10 years: 3 ASHE Board will approve continuation of CEP preconference CEP pre-conference will be offered on an annual basis Increased number of preconference proposals Increased number of preconference participants Increased participation in CEP Increased awareness of scholarly research in the areas of race, class and gender Enhanced professional standing of junior and midcareer faculty from underrepresented backgrounds Enhanced sense of community amongst preconference participants Increased scholarly collaboration and publications in the areas of race, class and gender Increased interest in external sponsorship of CEP pre-conference Impact Enhanced perception of ASHE as a diverse and equitable organization Increased diversity of ASHE membership CEP pre-conference attendance equals other ASHE pre-conferences Increased opportunities for mentorship of CEP members Increased percentage of underrepresented faculty members within various institutions of higher education Increased participation of underrepresented individuals in leadership positions within various institutions of higher education Sustainable external sponsorship of CEP preconference
