Codes can be used to conceal information or as shorthand to express ideas. The Enigma code machine was a famously “unbreakable” code that the Germans used to send high priority messages in World War II. You use codes when you text your friends: ROFL, LOL, BRB, etc. Chemists also have a code that you have already begun to work out. The chemical symbols represent the code for each element. Using symbols and notations shorten the process (if you understand the code) of writing out what chemical reaction occurred. Today you are going to take on the role of code breakers solving a puzzle written in binary code. Your task is to break the code and use the information to solve the puzzle. Binary code is the language of computers. In fact it is the only language the processor can understand. The BIOS chip changes all computer languages into binary code. It is called binary code because everything must be expressed as a 1 (on) or a 0 (off). For example – Normal Numbers 0 1 2 3 4 5 Binary Equivalents 0 1 10 11 100 101 You may not speak binary but we have a tool that can help you http://www.binarytranslator.com Investigation Question – What are the key pieces of information needed to solve an equation? Guiding your hypothesis- In math class you have solved numerous equations. What did you Page need to solve those? 1 Hypothesis: The key components of ANY equations are __________________. ©2014, Simplify Science Select LLC 7.1 01100011 01101000 01100101 01101101 01101001 01110011 01110100 01110010 01111001 Investigation Procedure – Read the entire procedure carefully BEFORE performing any of the tasks below and Record the necessary information below 1. What would happen washed your hair with hydrogen peroxide instead of water? 4) Practice with the code.
