Specialised Capabilities
Holmes McLeod offers a complete range of engineering consultancy services. Some of the
areas in which we have specialist capabilities are outlined below.
Roadworks Design
Greenfield sites and upgrades of existing roads require
very different approaches to design. Holmes McLeod has
the ability to address all requirements, including traffic
management, pavement design, urban drainage
considerations, driveways and pedestrian access.
Drawings can be presented to Council’s requirements and
level of detail, using client title blocks and industry
standard lettering and legend styles. A bill of quantities
or civil works estimate is included with all projects
detailing materials and work required to complete the
construction, to assist with budget considerations or
tender processes. Some roadworks projects completed
recently include:

Orton St, Mundubbera
Stormwater Modelling and Design &
Water Sensitive Urban Design
Using the industry standard XP-Storm with
2D and MUSIC, Holmes McLeod can
create accurate detailed models to
demonstrate existing stormwater problems
as well as clearly show the reductions in
flooding due to proposed stormwater
drainage upgrades and mitigation works,
including open channels, detention basins,
underground piped systems and nutrient
removal systems.
Where LIDAR data is available Stormwater Modelling can be completed without intrusive site
survey, however for the design of drainage structures and pipe lines accurate surveyed
levels and service locations will be required. Some example drainage projects include:
 Gladstone St, Maryborough West
 Bacon St, Moranbah
 William St, Urangan
Water Supply Design
Holmes McLeod’s detailed approach to water
supply provides accurate accounting of all
components required and allows services
and infrastructure to be avoided. All designs
are completed to WSAA standards, taking
into account the client’s requirements and
material and component preferences. Large
water supply projects Holmes McLeod has
completed include:
 Gayndah raw water off-take boreholes and pipework

Chris has designed over 4.5 km of gravity and 1.5km of low pressure sewer mains as well as
pump stations while employed by the former Maryborough City Council.
Structural Investigations & Pre-condition Surveys
Holmes McLeod has completed hundreds of investigations and reports on buildings and
other structures. We have completed structural investigation works for the Board of
Professional Engineers, Queensland Building and Construction Commission (formerly
Queensland Building Services Authority), Building & Asset Services (formerly QBuild),
numerous insurance agencies and appeared as expert witnesses in court. Our staff have
the knowledge, skills, experience and equipment to provide expert advice on the structural
integrity on a wide range of structures.
Hydraulics
Unlike most other engineering consultants, Holmes McLeod prepares all our hydraulic
designs in-house. Our hydraulic design staff have a broad mix of practical experience,
enforcement experience and theoretical design knowledge. This ensures our designs are
compliant, cost effective and innovative. When preparing on-site effluent disposal designs
we always conduct a site inspection and perform our own percolation testing, something
most other designers don’t do. This ensures you receive a design tailor made to your block
and soil conditions. Before certifying the installation of any of our designs we conduct an
inspection of the works. This helps ensure that the system has been installed correctly
giving you peace and mind that the system will work well for many years.
Regions Serviced
Holmes McLeod Consulting Engineers has offices located at Maryborough Queensland and
Warrnambool Victoria. Our Queensland office generally services the Wide Bay Burnett area
and has a large number of regular clients throughout this region. While most of our work
comes from this area we have taken on jobs all over Queensland and beyond. The Victorian
office services the south west of Victoria including the centres of Warrnambool, Hamilton,
Horsham, Port Fairy and Portland. We believe distance should not be a barrier to quality
engineering services and our staff often travel hundreds of kilometres to meet with clients
and perform inspections. We are very proud of the association we have built with regional
and rural areas of Queensland and Victoria and will continue to service these more remote
areas.
Training and Skills
We employ a large number of professional staff, all of which have formal engineering
qualifications. As part of our continuous professional development policy, staff are sent to
formal and informal training sessions on a regular basis. This ensures our engineers and
designers are abreast of current industry design standards and requirements and their skills
are kept current. Due to the diverse backgrounds of our staff members, we have a very
broad skill set enabling us to undertake a wide range of projects.
Some of the training our staff members have completed includes:
 Bachelor Degrees in Engineering
 Associate Degrees in Engineering

Leading Projects Completed and Major Clients
We have been operation in Maryborough Queensland since 1991 and opened our Victorian
office in 2007. Over this period of time we have successfully completed a large number of
major projects and built a strong base of regular clients, including some of the largest project
builders in the country.
Some projects we have completed include:
Bank Street Port Fairy Development
This project involved the structural and civil design of a 3 storey commercial development in
Port Fairy. Holmes McLeod was contracted to complete the full structural design and detail
and also the design and detail of associated road and drainage works. Once construction
commenced our staff completed all necessary inspections to ensure the development was
constructed as per the design and to council requirements.
William Street Road and Drainage Upgrades
When Fraser Coast Regional Council needed someone to design the upgrades to the
pavement and drainage at William Street in Urangan they contacted Holmes McLeod
Consulting Engineers. After meeting with council staff, our civil design team quickly
prepared a design that involved pavement rehabilitation and new drainage works. The
works were constructed with no problems and have been very successful in improving the
surface and flooding resilience of that section of road.
Dunkeld Community Hall
When the community of Dunkeld decided to build a new community hall, Holmes McLeod
Consulting Engineers was asked to prepare detailed structural and civil designs. Through
consultation with the committee and the architect, Holmes McLeod was able to provide
advice on design considerations and construction types to help bring the project in on a very
tight budget. This was a highly successful project that has provided a valuable and useable
asset for the community of Dunkeld.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Culverts
Following the devastating Australia Day 2013 floods, a large number of rural roads in the
Fraser Coast Regional Council area were damaged. Holmes McLeod was contracted by
HMC CONSULTING ENGINEERS PTY LTD | BUSINESS CAPABILITY STATEMENT
7
Council to prepare designs for 7 new floodway structures and appropriate rock protection.
Prior to commencing the design works, Holmes McLeod conducted joint site inspections with
Fraser Coast Regional Council to establish a full scope of works that was understood and
agreed to by both parties. We then conducted a survey at each site to determine the gully
profiles and modelled each site to determine flow velocities and depths. The designs were
completed on time and to a high standard. Fraser Coast Regional Council subsequently
contracted Holmes McLeod to complete designs for a further 2 floodways.
Kingfisher Bay Resort – Fraser Island
Holmes McLeod completed all the structural engineering at Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser
Island (other than the main pavilion building). This included the Sand Bar Complex, and
numerous accommodation blocks and suspended pathways. As the resort is located on a
world heritage listed island Holmes McLeod used innovative engineering to reduce the
amount of non-renewable resources used in the construction of this award winning eco
resort. As an example, a concrete free footing system was designed that used local timbers.
Maryborough RSL Redevelopment
The redevelopment of the Maryborough RSL is a high profile project that recently
commenced construction in Maryborough. Holmes McLeod recently finished the structural,
hydraulic and civil engineering on this multi-million dollar redevelopment project. By working
closely with the architect, we were able to provide a preliminary design in the allocated time
frames. This was used to prepare a preliminary cost estimate of the works which resulted in
some modifications to the original project scope. A detailed design was then completed
based on a revised scope of works. This close working relationship allowed for flexibility in
the project which will help ensure the success of the project in the long term.
North Burnett Council Work
During the 2011 flood event, the water intake infrastructure at Mundubberra and Gayndah on
the Burnett River was severely damaged. Holmes McLeod was contracted by North Burnett
Regional Council to undertake design work for new water infrastructure including:

Intake structures on the Burnett River.

Pumps and pipe lines.

Access Roads.
Once the design works were complete, Holmes McLeod successfully project managed the
delivery of this multi-million dollar project on behalf of North Burnett Regional Council.
Performance and Reliability
Holmes McLeod Consulting Engineers has been providing engineering consultancy services
to the Fraser Coast and Wide Bay Burnett Regions since 1991. Over this period of time we
have completed approximately 20000 engineering projects for a wide range of clients,
including regular clients that have been using us for nearly 20 years. Our longevity in a very
competitive market is largely due to the pride we take in our performance and the fact that
our clients can rely on us to deliver what we promise when we promise.

Customer Service and Market Response
Relationships and Communication
Holmes McLeod Consulting Engineers has built strong relationships with a large number of
regular clients. Most of our regular clients have dealt with the same Holmes McLeod staff
member for a number of years. This ensures that a strong relationship is developed and that
the client’s needs are clearly understood. Our engineers pride themselves on taking a
hands on approach and talking to clients about their projects before any design work is
started. This proactive approach helps us fully understand the client’s needs, limits the need
for rework and also helps the client develop an appreciation of what’s involved in the
engineering.
We appreciate honest feedback about the service we provide and often survey our
