Increasingly governments are no longer providing all the kinds of care facilities and services people seek. Citizens are asked to adopt a more active approach to their health and care situation. This leads to new civil initiatives, to a changing society where citizens are taking care of each other; working together with other care and also non-care organisations; and with younger people in their communities. Also, significantly, a lot of “elderly” people do not feel old at all. They are the “new youngsters”. In terms of policy and citizenship; in terms of approached to clients; and in terms of management styles and practices, including employment practices, it is essential to have an open minded approach: Where are we now? What are we heading for in the immediate and more distant future? Who are we dealing with? What’s going on? What lies ahead and how do we meet and deal effectively with these challenges? There’s a lot going on in European countries and it is surprisingly new and inspiring to learn just how old and young, civil and private initiatives are finding their way in a new society. This age of rapid changes and moving concepts of citizenship asks for new approaches to leadership and management. By being aware of the world we are living in and the types of challenges and issues we are heading for in the future, it is planned that the Opening will enable every participant in the EASHA Conference to enter the Programme in a receptive, energetic, responsive and inspired mood.
