The New Maynard Gallery
Notes on the works by Michael Wright:
Art should make you feel good. In an open exhibition, there will be some by professional artists and others where
the artists are less skilled but have an imaginative relationship with the world. I wanted to choose work that makes
you see something in the world in a different way.
No 98 - “After The Fall” by Ian Stronach (Winner - Best 2D Work)
This is a beautiful, sophisticated painting. The colour harmonics are executed with exquisite sensitivity. The
relationship between the colours and the spaces between the colours is almost as if they are notes in a piece of
visual music. It’s like listening to someone playing the violin really well. The artist is someone who is not just painting
as a hobby, but is completely immersed in the experience.
No 15 – “The Waiting Room” by Martin Burrage (Winner – Best Photograph)
This is definitely the most challenging photograph in the show. At first it appears to be just an empty room, as if you
are seeing nothing, but in fact it is pointing to another world, which engages the imagination. There is a contrast
between the ordered life of the waiting room and the chaotic life of the apartments across the street. It’s really
beautiful, and it makes me want to give it my full attention.
No 138 “When I was eight...” by Wendy Creak (Winner – Best 3D Work)
What strikes you first is the literal quality of this piece because of the choice of words. What also draws you in is the
textures and stitching. It’s visually sophisticated and quite inventive.
No 86 - “Elementary” by Kelsey Cook (Winner – Best work by an artist under 25)
A very skilled work, with beautiful colour harmonics. There is something exquisite about the edge of the profile. This
was made using some digital techniques, but there is still a real sense of subtlety. It’s very interesting.
No 3 “Geisha in Gion District, Kyoto, Japan” (Runner Up sponsored by Stevenson & Parker)
A lively, colourful print, which has captured the geisha in an off-duty moment, revealing some of their personality
beneath the painted faces.
No 56 “Mousehole” by Francine Holland (Runner Up sponsored by Stevenson & Parker)
There are some lovely moments in this joyful work such as the community suggested by the coloured boards
propped up on the wall, and how they are echoed in the colours of the window behind. Although it is a conservative
piece, it is obvious that the artist has been really looking at the scene and engaging with it.
No 96 Memory Bank 3 by Diedre Shepherd
Exquisitely beautiful by an experienced artist who really understands colour harmonics. Although an abstract, it
suggests a landscape philosophically. This is a small work, but the relationship of shapes against a void makes you
think of a larger space, rather like a Haiku poem.
No 87 All That Jazz by Judith Simons
A pleasing harmonious composition, reminiscent of the 1950’s and 60’s. It’s visually intelligent.
No 23 Little London by Rob Draper
A witty photo that plays on ideas of Englishness. Technically it’s very accomplished with the depth of field and extra
blurring on the buildings in the background. Flippant but interesting.

2
The New Maynard Gallery
No 132 Operative by Mike Renney
An anthropological piece, which, like the grimacing robot no 131 is inventive and mischievous.
No 55 Winter by Jayne Casells
An intriguing piece, very pleasing to look at.
No 61 Still Life with Pears by Judith Moule
Beautifully done, a really intelligent and thoughtful composition, with clear influences of classical fine art training.
No 65 After Lascaux by Marianne Dorn
An attractive work which evokes a feeling of a place – not just a copied photograph.
No 84 Life Painting by Daniel Shadbolt
All the colours, apart from one in the crook of the arm, are desaturated, which makes them work together in a
completely different way. It holds your attention.
No 99 Garden 1 by Mick Miller
A very accomplished piece, well balanced colours and composition with audacious touches and a great sense of
style. The paper is very good quality and I like the confidence of showing the torn edge – it all works together.
Notes on the works by Sheila Woolf & Anne Woolmington
No 61 “Still Life With Pears” by Judith Moule (Winner – Best Presented Work sponsored by Stanborough Fine Arts)
This is a bespoke frame which has been chosen with great care to complement the colours and the proportions of
the painting. It suits the style and has been crafted to an extremely high standard.
No 76 “Woodland Trees – Autumn” by Cathy Smale (Highly Commended – Best Presented Work sponsored by
Stanborough Fine Arts)
We were disappointed not to have another prize to award as this work is equally deserving. The box frame is
beautifully made, and the sides have been painted as part of the picture, adding to the charm and interest of the
painting.
The New Maynard Gallery is a charitable trust run on a not-for-profit basis and supported
by Campus West. Its aims are to support Hertfordshire artists, provide education and
enjoyment for the community by putting on exhibitions of art. For more information visit
