Charge Nurses Play Key Role in Reducing the Occurrence of HACs
LOUISVILLE, Ky.— Hospital Acquired Conditions (HACs) are a major issue in healthcare
today, costing hospitals thousands of dollars. With charge nurses playing a key role in the
reduction of HACs, Catalyst Learning Company has introduced a training program to help nurse
leaders develop key competencies to foster a culture of safety. NCharge® is a series of courses
focused on the ability of the charge nurse to improve profitability through skill building.
Competencies that promote healthcare safety include communication strategies, conflict
management, effective time management, delegation, and accountability. The NCharge
curriculum is entirely evidence-based and was developed by clinicians to address these important
skills through courses such as “Charge Nurse Fundamentals” and “Critical Thinking Skills for
Charge Nurses.”
“As leaders in a healthcare organization, charge nurses must help others understand and adhere
to patient safety standards,” said Lynn Fischer, president of CLC. “The NCharge curriculum
addresses various communication styles and conflict modes to support a culture of safety
between peers, supervisors and patients.”
NCharge courses are 70% interactive, led in a classroom by an instructor, and feature video
vignettes, case studies, and interactive classroom activities. In addition to “Charge Nurse
Fundamentals” and “Critical Thinking Skills for Charge Nurses,” CLC recently released the third
and fourth courses, “Leading Change in a Dynamic Climate” and “Supervisory Skills for
Positive Outcomes.” The fifth course, “Employee Engagement and the Patient Experience,” will
be released in January.
NCharge courses are accredited by the Tennessee Nurses Association (TNA) and meet all ANCC
guidelines.
