BEST PRACTICES FOR ENSURING QUALITY CARE OF RESEARCH ANIMALS & MAINTAINING COMPLIANCE Perform only those procedures described in the protocol There can be NO deviation from a protocol without prior approval from the IACUC Ensure that everyone on the protocol has read it & is familiar with all its procedures Document any observations, analgesics, or therapeutic administrations in Medical Record and/or Monitoring Form Remember- if it’s not written down, it didn’t happen! Communicate with veterinary staff regarding the health status of post-procedural animals If an animal develops any complications during or after procedures, you must communicate with the veterinary staff and document this in the medical record or Monitoring Form Observe post-procedural animals according to the schedule outlined in the approved protocol Follow the protocol exactly as written. Any reduction in the schedule must be approved by the IACUC. Pay close attention to any weight loss and if an animal’s weight loss approaches the maximum allowed in your protocol, notify the veterinary staff. Record observations on daily log (all species) Label syringes and containers Always label secondary containers with the name of the substance stored and the expiration date (if mixed compound, the expiration date to use is the earliest). If there is no expiration date, then record date made. Initials of person making solution/compound should be on label. Label syringes with contents to be used on live animals. Dispose of properly after use. Allow only people listed on the protocol to perform procedures on animals Assure that all staff are added to the protocols and have been thoroughly trained to perform all procedures they are listed to do. Document the training in their training log. Follow aseptic technique for all survival surgeries- including those with rodents Follow IACUC policies for rodent & large animal surgeries. Use sterile instruments & supplies and good aseptic technique. All staff performing surgeries should be competent in anesthesia & surgical procedures prior to beginning experiments. (Training available by Training Coordinator) Ensure all administered substances can be used Any use of non-pharmaceutical grade compounds must follow IACUC SOP. Expired anesthetics & analgesics must never be used. Label any item that is not for animal use “not for use in live animals” Label any item that has expired and will be used in terminal procedures “for terminal procedures only” Store controlled substances in secured locations Always lock up controlled substances Record all usage on appropriate log sheet. Expiration Dates Make it a habit to check the expiration dates on all substances and supplies on a regular basis.
