General Membership Meeting (Back To School Night)
August 28, 2014
I.
Announcements
President Ann Greenawalt calls meeting to order at 6:05pm, establishes quorum,
introduces herself, presents background on POES PTA, its achievements in 2013-14 and
goals in 2014-15. Goals in 2014-15 include increasing membership to 400, launching social
media communication, presenting $10K Technology Grant to school, completing Project
Playground, supporting classroom enrichment (i.e. Field Trips, BrainPOP, Accelerated
Reading) and reaching out to new and military POES families.
Treasurer Meryl Tseng presents basics of proposed 2014-15 Budget (attached).
II. Motions
Motion made and seconded to approve minutes of previous General Assembly Meeting
(attached) held on May 15, 2014. Motion unanimously approved.
Motion made and seconded to approve 2014-15 Operating Budget (short version,
attached). Floor opened, no questions or comments. Motion unanimously approved.
Motion made and seconded to approve 2014-15 Playground Budget (short version,
attached). Floor opened, question re: cost of playground (Greenawalt answer:
approximately $60K), question re: county giving money for playground replacement
(Greenawalt answer: no). Motion unanimously approved.
III. Presentations
Becky Davis presents mission and status of Project Playground, including sponsorship and
volunteer opportunities.
Principal Karen Bailey welcomes parents, thanks PTA for “treasured partnership.”
Greenawalt adjourns meeting at 6:22pm.

CALL TO ORDER, APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Meeting called to order at 7:10pm by President Ann Greenawalt. Minutes from previous meeting (Apr 8,
2014) unanimously approved.
OFFICER REPORTS
President
Greenawalt reviews Mission of PTA. Announces $10,000 Tech Grant presented to POES on behalf of PTA,
ongoing membership drive and need for Yearbook Chair.
Treasurer
Treasurer Meryl Tseng states 2013-14 audit completed in July, 2014-15 Operating and Playground
Budgets approved at previous General Membership Meeting. Gives brief overview and current balances
for each account. Makes motion to move $455 from AACPS Music Camp Scholarship line to pay for half
cost of 130 student subscriptions to First in Math for 3rd Grade. Short discussion, motion passes.
Administrator
Principal Karen Bailey announces addition of many new staff members over summer, more diverse
faculty. Thanks PTA for financial support regarding tech grant, advises goal is Smart Board in every
classroom.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Membership – Deanne Carris
311 members to date. 103 indicate on membership form willingness to volunteer.
Project Playground – Abbey Boudreau (for Becky Davis)
Project 60% funded, goal is full funding by end of school year (approx. $24,000 to go). All paperwork
submitted. Sponsorship Packets and Brick Program rolling.
Building and Grounds – Ann Greenawalt (for Laura Diamond)
Fall Clean-Up Day is Sept 27, 1-4PM. Committee also working on recycling and traffic issues.
Fundraising – Ann Greenawalt (for Jill Alexis and Aileen Zaversnik)
Over 130 people attended POES Night at Skate Zone. KidStuff Coupon Books Fundraiser going on now.
POES Night at Greene Turtle is Nov 12.
Hospitality – Kristin Osborn
New chair gives overview of committee, solicits volunteers.
Military Family Outreach – Ann Greenawalt (for Nicole Pudol)

Greenawalt announces approval of Project Playground by AACPS Board; equipment paid, fundraising
continues for installation (goal is early 2015).
Treasurer
Treasurer Meryl Tseng gives overview of recent financial activity (including disbursements for two field
trips, half movie license) and current balances for Operating ($4075) and Playground ($7802) Accounts.
Administrator
Principal Karen Bailey distributes calendar of upcoming events.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Membership – Abbey Boudreau (for Deanne Carris)
358 members to date. Mrs Beall wins classroom contest, Kindergarten wins grade level contest.
Project Playground – Abbey Boudreau (for Becky Davis)
Need $10K for installation (not including brick installation). 20 bricks sold so far during Pave the Path
fundraiser, generating ideas for sales including extending purchase deadline. Asking local businesses for
sponsorship continues.
Reflections – Abbey Boudreau
Still looking for participation, reaching out to students and teachers again.
Spirit Wear – Vikki Byerly
Over $573 raised for Project Playground. Looking into selling online, changing up merchandise
colors/styles. Will sell magnets at school events. Target date for Spirit Wear delivery to teachers is Dec 1.
Military Family Outreach – Hollie Parrish
Developing online repository of all resources available to military families. Suggests carnival as fundraiser.

Upcoming events include Greene Turtle Night Nov 12 (flyer required), Book Fair Pizza Night Nov 18,
Grotto Pizza Night Dec 3 (flyer required). Family Involvement Conference Nov 15.

Books) and current balances for Operating ($5467) and Playground ($12,316) Accounts.
Administrator
Principal Karen Bailey distributes calendar of upcoming events and urges everyone to take Maryland Safe
and Supportive Schools Survey by Dec 19 (provides link and password).

Project Playground – Abbey Boudreau (for Becky Davis)
Pave the Path display up in school lobby. Looking for grade level reps to organize each grade to buy its
own brick. Laura Diamond working on grants. Push in new year to reach remaining $8-10K fundraising
goal.
Reflections – Abbey Boudreau
Still no participation. Not pushing due to holidays and other board priorities.
Spirit Wear – Vikki Byerly
Merchandise delivery to classrooms by Fri Dec 5.
Communications – Katherine Randall
Need pics for yearbook, number down compared to this time last year. eNews (Dec 1) open rate only
41%; via Facebook 14 clicks. Suggests returning to publishing hard copy monthly newsletter since digital
numbers low; discussion. Requests all communication sent to tech email
(technology@pineyorchardpta.com) rather than personal email addresses.
Fundraising – Jill Alexis
20 KidStuff books left over, will try to sell at holiday concerts.
Membership – Deanne Carris
369 members to date, 371 total members last school year (2013-14).
ANNOUNCEMENTS/OPEN FORUM
Yearbooks sale starts online Dec 9. Forms also available at holiday concerts. Price $25.
Upcoming events include Grotto Pizza Night Dec 3 (flyer required).
Discussion of Movie Night. Tentatively set for Fri Feb 6 at 6:30pm. Will include Teacher Auction
(researching online auction capabilities).
Discussion of STEM Night hosted by Club Scientific and POES PTA. Tentatively set for Thu Mar 5 at
6:30pm.

Receiving many pics from parents of Piney events for inclusion. Dedication sales went well, five pages
worth. As of Feb 10, 109 yearbook orders, contract is for 350. Delivery Jun 9.
Military Family Outreach – LaTosha French
Attempting to get military band to perform at school. Considering pursuing sponsor to underwrite cost of
purchased bracelets so every student could receive one for free.
Project Playground – Abbey Boudreau (for Becky Davis)
Pave the Path Fundraiser continues. Brickman donating installation of brick path. Tseng suggests instead
of Family Fun Run (currently on hold), maybe tie Family Fitness Day Event into Playground Ribbon Cutting
Event. Discussion of thanking donors online; will offer option to opt out of website, social media
recognition.
