"Limnological research in and around the
European Alps –
a common effort for a common future"
Freshwater ecosystems in and around the Alps are of upmost ecological, economic, and
recreational importance and act as sentinels of climate change. They are increasingly
affected by human activities and threatened by global change. It is a truly common challenge
of limnologists that work on freshwater systems in and around the Alps to establish an
innovative network of limnoligical research centers and also stakeholders to develop common
strategies for basic and applied research as well as sustainable lake services across the
Alpine and peri-Alpine space. The objectives of this meeting are to,
a) unite Alpine and peri-Alpine limnologists to work on innovative scientific tools and
to unify and strengthen data collection of our freshwater ecosystems,
b) provision scientific in-depth knowledge on communalities and differences in the
response of lakes, ponds, reservoirs, etc. to past and present environmental
change, and,
c) to help manage tomorrow's risks today: identifying and maintaining lake
ecosystem services in a changing Alpine and peri-Alpine space.
Limnologists from Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany
and Austria are invited to attend and participate at this meeting. Our research
in and around the Alps is truly international and clearly research funding from
pure national sources gets increasingly more difficult. Thus, this meeting is
an opportunity to further establish an inter-national network of limnologists in
and around the Alps.
