Academic Grade Forgiveness FAQ
1) Where do we find the IUPUI Grade Forgiveness Policy?
http://registrar.iupui.edu/forgive.html
2) Who can apply for Grade Forgiveness?
IUPUI Grade Forgiveness is an option available to “encourage capable, mature undergraduate
students to return to IUPUI when they have achieved poorly during an earlier attempt at higher
education within Indiana University. This policy is not available for graduate students or students
seeking any second undergraduate degree.”
Section 1.“The IUPUI Forgiveness policy applies to former IU students pursuing a first
undergraduate degree who have been away from the IU system and have not attended any other
college or university, including any campus of IU, for a minimum of the last three years. Each
school may set a longer minimum if it so chooses. This policy first becomes available to students
returning to IUPUI in the Fall of 1996” http://registrar.iupui.edu/forgive.html
3) Where does Grade Forgiveness display?
Grade Forgiveness affects the Student Program Summary statistics and displays on the unofficial
Student Program Transcript. Grade Forgiveness notations do not display on the Official IU
Transcript. Forgiveness is reflected in the Student Program Summary statistics.
4) What does Grade Forgiveness impact?

Grade Forgiveness reflects the Faculty Academic Policy of the student’s primary
Academic Program. It impacts the term and cumulative Student Program statistics. The
results of granting Forgiveness impacts the student’s Academic Level (Fresh/Soph/Jr/Sr).
It also supports academic advising and advising reports for the student’s “primary”
academic program.
Example: If a student is admitted to both Science and Liberal Arts, in which Liberal Arts
is the primary program, all statistics and reports will reflect the Liberal Arts academic
policies.

Grade Forgiveness impacts Indiana University Enrollment and Special Credit (Other
Credit)

Terms in which the student completely withdrew and are before the student’s “return” to
IUPUI after at least three (3) years absent from higher education are “forgiven terms”
which need to be noted on the form. No grades/classes will be forgiven (no need to
check one of the option boxes). The transcript note will be added to that term to indicate
the full range to terms included in Academic Forgiveness.
5) What is the term code structure if the class was taken before 2000?
If a class was offered in a term from 1900 to 1999 the term code begins with a “3”
6) What is the correct Summer Term code?

If a class was offered in a term prior to 2005 Indiana University had two summer terms the
coding ends in a “4” for Summer I and a “6” for Summer II. (e.g. 3984, Summer I 1998) and
(e.g. 4016 is Summer II 2001)

If a class was offered in a term after 2005 Indiana University has a single Summer Term and
the coding ends in a “5” (e.g. 4065, Summer 2006)
7) How are classes with Grade Replacement handled for Forgiveness?
Grade Replacement and Grade Forgiveness are two distinct academic policies.
GF/11

If a grade has been replaced, it can be Forgiven with a “FOR1” total forgiveness and the
class will not retain GPA or Earned Academic Credit.
Grade Replacement total hours or classes are counted toward the maximum allowed by an
academic unit regardless if the class has also been Forgiven.
8) How are classes with a grade of “W” handled for Forgiveness?

Students have withdrawn from classes with grades of “W’ thus there is no need for
“Forgiveness” for that class.
Class by class Forgiveness is not granted for those terms in which all classes have grades of W
or if the student has withdrawn from the University (Term Withdrawal). However, if the Term falls
between two terms in which classes have been Forgiven, that Term is also noted as Forgiven
with a Transcript Note just like the other terms.
9) How are classes which already have Repeat Code handled for Forgiveness?

When a class is “forgiveness” the Forgiveness “trumps” the academic repeat analysis
and policies. The Repeat Code is removed and replaced with the appropriate
Forgiveness indicator.

Special Situation for Schools with the Repeat policy of “BEST”
In the situation where the Academic Policy states that the “BEST” attempt of a repeated
class is retained, and the original class has a grade of “C or higher” and is now is now
forgiven, the “total” forgiveness code of “FOR1” will be applied to replicate the same
effect as the DUPL repeat code which removes both GPA and Earned Hours/credit.
10) Do other Schools at IUPUI honor Grade Forgiveness once granted?
At IUPUI schools do not automatically honor Grade Forgiveness granted by another IUPUI school
or by another IU campus.
Grade Forgiveness is granted by the student’s primary academic program. If the student changes
Programs, the Grade Forgiveness adjustments are automatically wiped off the academic record.
The Transcript Text is the only notation that remains to indicate Forgiveness was previously
granted.
